  • With a theme of “Expect a Miracle,” the message to the congregation was to keep on dreaming, as churches in the community united on Jan. 17 at Gospel Temple #2 in Galax to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    Galax Vice Mayor Willie Greene told the congregation to use their freedom to be great.
    “Martin Luther King said it doesn't matter what job you get,” he said. “Get a job, and be the best you can be at it... We have the freedom to be great, and anything less is to be a slave again.

  • Hayden Thomas Blevins celebrated his second birthday Dec. 10 with a Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Party at Macado’s Restaurant with his family. He is the son of Jason and Alison Blevins of Ennice, N.C.

    His grandparents are Jim and Brenda Blevins of Ennice. N.C., and Ray and Nonnie Plummer of Troutdale.

  • Dwight Osborne and Carmen Vaught were united in marriage at Hillcrest Baptist Church on Oct. 10, 2010.
    Family and friends attended.

    Osborne is the son of Junior and Faye Osborne of the Fairview community.
    Vaught is the daughter of Dallas and Shirley Vaught of the Cranberry community.

  • Kylie Noel Crigger turned three on Jan. 10. She is the daughter of Jonathan Crigger and Hannah Lineberry.

    Her grandparents are Ricky and Vicky Lineberry and Lee Crigger and Mitch Crigger.

  • Jeremiah Levi Foster will turn one year old Jan. 12. He is the son of P.J. Foster and Jessica Baldwin of Fries.

    His grandparents are Dewey Baldwin and Sheron Hash of Fries, Tina Foster of Elkton, Md., and Peter Foster Sr. of Dunn, N.C. His great-grandmothers are Eileen Carr of Elkton, Md., and Addie Baldwin of Galax, formerly of Elk Creek. Foster and his family will celebrate with a Winnie the Pooh party at their home.

  • James Breece Roten (J.B.) celebrated his second birthday Oct. 12 at his home on Coal Creek with family and friends. He is the son of Mike and Kristy Roten of Galax.

    His grandparents are Breece and Carol Roten of Galax and Tom and Gloria Anderson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Great-grandmothers are Opal Robinson of Galax and Patricia Lamantia of Apache Junction, Ariz.

  • Westin Michael Johnson of Galax celebrated his first birthday Dec. 5 with a Mickey Mouse party. He is the son of Michael and Kasey Johnson.

    His grandparents are David and Pam Flippin, Bert and Carol Elliott of Galax. His great-grandparents are Dennis and Helen Flippin of Lowgap, N.C., and Lilly Mae Melton of Galax.

  • Over a half century ago, people in the mountains of Southwest Virginia and Northwest North Carolina celebrated Christmas with house parties that included old-time string music, song and dance over a period of two weeks during the holiday season.

    “Breakin’ Up Christmas” is both a name for the 12 days of partying, dancing and music-making after the holiday, and a song sung during that period.

  • Gilbert and Betty Fortner celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Dec. 23, 2010.
    They were married Dec. 23, 1950, in York, S.C.
    Their children honored them with a celebration dinner at Shatley Springs Nov. 25.

  • A Grayson County infant is being treated for third-degree burns, and his family is looking for help paying bills and covering expenses as they stay by his side at a hospital in Ohio.
    Jayden McCraw, eight months old, has burns that cover his body from his chest to his knees, according to his aunt, Elena Smith of Galax.
