    WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Life is a constant adrenalin rush for Holly Mason, a Grayson County, Va., native who recently was named program manager of AirCare Critical Care Transport Service at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
    Holly runs a service that includes two helicopters and four ambulances that transport critically ill or injured patients to Wake Forest Baptist, the only Level 1 Trauma Center in North Carolina’s Piedmont region.

  • The Rev. and Mrs. Randy J. Key announced the engagement of their daughter, Melissa Gail Key, to David Aaron Light of Thomasville, N.C.
    Light is the son of Duane and Kimberly Light, also of Thomasville.

    The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of the late Howard and Verta “MaMa” Key and the late Paul Kendrick and Mary Kendrick, all of Martinsville.
    Key is a graduate of A Beka Academy.
    A February wedding is planned.

  • Joseph Coltin Mays celebrated his third birthday May 19. He is the son of Larry Mays of Galax and Dawn Newman of Woodlawn. H

    is grandparents are Bobby and Wanda Mays of Galax and Dylas and Faye Newman of Woodlawn. His sisters are Holly and Jessie and brothers are Jarrid, Jackson and Jameson.

    WHITETOP — It's highly unlikely that any of the winners of an eating contest at the annual Whitetop Mountain Ramp Festival got a kiss after their victory.
    The wild onion eating competition results in pungent breath that could peel paint.
    It's a good thing that the top prizes all come with a bottle of mouthwash, in addition to cash.
    Taking home the big bottle of Scope at this year's event on May 15 was a kilt-clad contender with a stomach of iron — defending champ Toby Shutters.

  • Hicks Testerman, Carsonville community, Independence, celebrated his 90th birthday May 13. He is married to Lorraine Burris.

    He has four children, Glen and Mary Testerman, Billy and Betty Testerman, Linda Waller and Anna and Kathy and Robert Asbury. He also has three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

  • Jimmy Poole and Shirley Hines announced their engagement on March 12.
    Poole is the son of Buddy and Brenda Poole of Ennice, N.C.

    Hines is the daughter of Bobby and Debra Gibson of Galax, and Bobby Miller of Lexington, N.C.
