  • Bailey Mayson Newberry celebrated her third birthday July 1 with a My Little Pony Party at Dannelly Park. She is the daughter of Paul and Sherri Newberry of Galax.

    Her grandparents are Susan Johnson and he late Larry Billings, and Paul and Judy Newberry and the late Linda Weisman-Arnold. Her great-grandparents are Otis and Joann Griffith.

  • Marley Cornett and Russell Drawdy have announced their engagement.
    She is the daughter of David and Teresa Cornett of Woodlawn, and  granddaughter of Donna Elliott of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Bonnie Cornett of Galax.

    Cornett is a 2009 graduate of Radford University and is employed by Grayson County Public Schools.

  • WOODLAWN — Stereo speakers of 18-wheelers rolling down the interstates reverberate with the evangelistic message of a 47-year-old Woodlawn woman.
    To reach out to strangers on the road, Wilma Foreman first speaks the words that the Lord gives to her into a cassette recorder.
    The audience presumably consists of commercial drivers, transporting goods mostly over the East Coast,  but it could be any motorists who find the sermons on CDs at truck stops, free for the taking.

    We are at school. How is Mrs. Clause doing? Is she cooking the cookies yet? Have I been good today? I want a cell phone, computer, fushigi, a t.v., a horse, and fingernails, and the book “Love, Santa”.

  • J.R. and Jan Wilson will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at West Galax United Methodist Church on McCamant Drive.
    They were married Dec. 26, 1960. They are natives of the Galax area.

    J.R. retired from the Galax Water Department, and Jan retired from Galax City Schools.
    The Wilsons have two sons and daughters-in-law: Shawn and Kendra Wilson, and Timmy and Sophia Wilson. Their four grandchildren are Matt, April, and Shanna Wilson; and Heather Jones.

  • Rickina Shatuan Brown of Marion and Keith Derrick Alley of Galax were married Nov. 20, 2010 at Taylor’s Chapel Church in Fries.
    The bride-elect is the daughter of Sharon (Greg) Jones of Wytheville, and James “Ricky” and Evelyn Brown of Sparta, N.C. She is the granddaughter of the late Joe and Rita Brown and Verl Sr. and the late JoAnn Brown of Galax.

    She is a 1998 graduate of Marion Senior High School of Marion. She is a full-time mother of Aaliyah.
    The groom is the son of Ladonna and Wayne Alley of Galax.

  • Jack Easter and Norma Burcham Easter of Midlothian celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Nov. 26. They have two daughters, Kim Easter McGraw and Jill Easter Burke, and two grandchildren.

    Jack is retired after 51 years with Virginia’s Department of Transportation and Norma is retired after 25 years with the Chesterfield County School System. She is formerly of Galax, and a graduate of Woodlawn High School.

  • LAMBSBURG — When children in Lambsburg needed a ninth player to have a softball game, educator Frank Hawks would take the field, acquaintances remembered.

    Sometimes, when students had to play inside during inclement weather, Hawks would put mats out in the cafeteria at Mount Bethel school, remove his shoes and do tumbling with the students. Speaker Joey Haynes remembered that being his and others' introduction to gymnastics.

  • Kari Denise Arnold of Max Meadows and Jamie Louis Carpenter of Elk Creek were united in marriage June 19 at  Baker’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ivanhoe.
    The double-ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Chris Stansell.

    Wedding music was provided by vocalists Keith Buchanan and Sheree Skinner.
    The bride wore a strapless beaded lace gown draped in chiffon with a chapel length train.
    Maid of honor was Holly Arnold of Max Meadows, sister of the bride.
