  • LAUREL FORK — A long-time pastor at Gladesboro Lutheran Church will establish a ministry in new pastures — specifically, to use his insights to make places of worship more welcoming to the visually impaired.

    Pastor Duane Steele, who is legally blind, has prepared for this his final sermon this Sunday after preaching from the piano and the pulpit there for 32 years.
    In that time, he's delivered more than 1,500 sermons.
    His last message is called "Mustard Seed Faith."

  • James “Morgan” Farmer, son of Joe Hoer III and Michelle Farmer of Galax, celebrated his first birthday Aug. 20. A Barnyard Buddies birthday celebration was enjoyed with family and friends.

  • Timothy Stephen Smith and Melissa Dawn McAdams Turner have announced their engagement.
    Smith is the son of Bill and Frances Smith of Independence.
    Turner is the daughter of Gilbert and Donna Suitt of Mouth of Wilson.

    An Oct. 16 wedding is planned at Bible Baptist Church in Galax.
    After a honeymoon trip to Savannah, Ga., the couple will reside in Woodlawn.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Y.B. Hall Jr. celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sept. 9, 2010.
    The couple were married Sept. 9, 1950, by the late Rev. Richard E. Hamblin.
    She is the former Eva Sue Edwards.

    In celebration of their diamond anniversary, they were honored with a supper at Shoney’s in Hillsville.
    They have a son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Debbie Hall, and a grandson, his wife and daughter — Brad, Aleighthia and Elleighana Hall.

  • Candace Brook Carico and Seth Joseph Ayers were joined in holy matrimony at Beech Grove Baptist Church on July 25, 2010.

    The bride is the daughter of Wanda and Jeff Vaught and Eddie and Lisa Carico. She is the granddaughter of Clayton and Velin Carico and Don and Doris Cox.
    The groom is the son of Brandon Ayers and Marcia and Eric Garrison. He is the grandson of Debbie and Shirley Ayers and Hascle and JoAnn Cheeks. He is the great-grandson of Rufus Ayers, Robert Cheeks, Evelyn Cox and Elton and Kathryn Horton.
    Pastor Mark Carico officiated.

    Carrie Sage Lindsey, a senior, was crowned homecoming queen during Galax High School's homecoming game on Sept. 24. Due to a three-way tie, three seniors were named homecoming princesses — Raven Slater, Kristen Osborne and Hannah Cassell. Each princess was escorted by their father onto the GHS football field during the game's halftime.

  • FANCY GAP — A couple has gone racing down memory lane with a tub full of recollections about grassroots tracks, cars, drivers and mechanics.
    Before NASCAR took over the racing world, many communities had homegrown speedways — dirt or paved — where driver revved up engines and mechanics tinkered on the cars just for the excitement.

  • In celebration of the 90th birthday of Annabelle Bunn, her daughter Kathy Bunn Murray hosted a birthday party July 10 for 96 guests at Galax First Assembly of God Church. She is from a family of 10 children and had 13 children of her own over a span of 25 years.

    She has 36 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 12 step-great grandchildren.
    Bunn was born in 1920 during the Depression, and her country home had to running water or electricity.

  • Palin Leanne Snider turned one Aug. 11. She celebrated Aug. 7 with a Princess party at Pleasant Grove Fellowship Hall with family and friends. Her parents are Curtis and Lorie Snider.

    She has an older sister, Blair Snider. Her grandparents are Danny and Linda Deskins of Dugspur and Harold and Joyce Snider of Dublin and the late Kathy Snider. Great-grandparents are Pauline Marshall of Laurel Fork and Freida Deskins of Hillsville. She has a special aunt, Holly Choate.

  • Breanna Lynn McMillian celebrated her second birthday Aug. 25 at home with a Princess party with family and friends. Her parents are Glen and Rebecca McMillian of Cana.
    Her paternal grandparents are Donald and Cathy McMillian of Cana. Maternal grandparents are Brenda Carter of Cana and James Bevins of Mount Airy, N.C. Paternal grandparent is Glen McMillian of Cana and maternal grandparents are Elsie Easter of Cana and Doris Finley of Mount Airy, N.C. Special aunts are Chasity McMillian and Tina Carter, both of Cana.
