  • Mr. and Mrs. Richard “Butch” Wright of Rural Retreat announce the engagement of their daughter, Cyndi Leigh Wright, to Timothy Adam Linkous, son of Larry Linkous Sr. and Sandra Linkous of Speedwell.

    Wright is the granddaughter of Charles “Puffy” and Doris Wright, Okey King and the late George King, all of Rural Retreat.
    Linkous is the grandson of the late F.J. and Nina Bell linkous of Speedwell and the late John and Lucy Shipwash of Ivanhoe.
    A May 26 wedding in Rural Retreat is planned.

  • Samantha Dawn Shinault and Corporal David Andrew Jones were united in marriage Dec. 22, 2011, by the Rev. Samuel Blevins at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Galax.
    The bride is the daughter of Dorothy Sue Shinault and Cecil Eugene Shinault of Galax.
    She graduated from Galax High School in 2009, and attends Wytheville Community College in the nursing program.
    The groom is the son of Rhonda Carper and is the stepson of Tony Carper, both of Galax.
    He graduated from Carroll County High School in 2008.



    The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream of racial and social equality continues to inspire decades after his passing.
    Local church congregations came together on Jan. 15 to celebrate the Civil Rights leader's lasting influence.
    The theme of the annual event — held this year at Gospel Temple in the Oldtown community in  West Galax — was "Born To Inspire."


  • Lyndsey Hudson and Travis Eastridge were united in marriage Oct. 15, 2011, at Foster Falls Amphitheater in Foster Falls. The Rev. Paul Looney officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of Dickie and Diane Strock of Bland. She is the granddaughter of Tom Hudson and the late Margie Hudson of Max Meadows.

    The groom is the son of Eddie and Rhonda Eastridge of Galax. He is the grandson of Lois Vaughan of Galax and the late Alfred Vaughan and Juanita Eastridge of Galax and the late Ingram Eastridge.
    Matron of honor was Leigh-Ann Pike, sister of the bride.




    For the Dows, it was the best Christmas present they could ever ask for.
    The family’s boxer, Daisy, was returned to them before Christmas after being missing for a year-and-a-half.
    In July 2010, during a family gathering, the Dows’ rat terrier broke her leash and escaped from their yard on Nuckolls Curve Road in Galax. Soon after, Daisy slipped out of her collar and followed behind.

  • Carrie Nelson and Eric Campbell were united in marriage on June 25, 2011 in the King College Memorial Chapel in Bristol, Tenn. The Rev. Doug Stuart, pastor of the bride, officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of Ricky and Becky Nelson of Independence and the granddaughter of Argil and Alene Roberts also of Independence and Mary Nelson and the late Billy Nelson of Corners Rock.

    The groom is the son of Clifton and Sonja Campbell of Unicoi, Tenn.
    The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents.
