  • Kari Denise Arnold of Max Meadows and Jamie Louis Carpenter of Elk Creek were united in marriage June 19 at  Baker’s Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church in Ivanhoe.
    The double-ring ceremony was performed by the Rev. Chris Stansell.

    Wedding music was provided by vocalists Keith Buchanan and Sheree Skinner.
    The bride wore a strapless beaded lace gown draped in chiffon with a chapel length train.
    Maid of honor was Holly Arnold of Max Meadows, sister of the bride.

  • INDEPENDENCE — Bona Dee Murray remembers going hungry when she and her mom ran out of food when she was just a young girl. 

    When their shelves were bare, churches helped to feed them. 

    About 10 years ago, it became Murray's dream for First United Methodist Church of Independence to collect food and donate it to those in need through Social Services. 

  • Marissa Daniele Sexton and David Thomas Dickens were united in marriage at Camp Dickenson by the Rev. Leo Phillips on Aug. 7, 2010.
    The bride was escorted to the altar by her father, and given in marriage by her family.
    The bride is the daughter of William and Doris Sexton of Max Meadows, and Dennis and Julia Swan of Sumiton, Ala.

    Her paternal grandparents are Helena Sexton and the late Charles Sexton of Galax. Her maternal grandparents are Colin Robinson and the late Betty Jo Robinson, of Waycross, Ga.

  • Melinda Sue Brewer and Timothy Allen Monk were united in marriage Oct. 16 at Fairview Baptist Church by Pastor Sam Holder.
    The bride is the daughter of Jimmy and JoAnne Brewer of Galax, and Peggy and James Carroll of Galax.
    The groom is the son of JoAnn Monk and the late Rev. James Monk of Galax.

    The couple’s daughters Skylar Rose and Autumn Starr Monk attended, as well as family and friends.
    The couple resides in Galax.

  • Paul Wayne Shaw and Jennifer Edwards Hall were united in marriage on June 19, 2010.
    The couple had a private ceremony at the home of Charlie and Sandy Alderman. Close friends and family attended.
    The bride is the daughter of John Paul Edwards and the late Ruth Edwards of Galax. She is the granddaughter of the late Worth and Etoile Edwards of Galax and Martha Jones of Wilmington, Ohio.
    The groom is the son of James Shaw and the late Nellie Mae Shaw of Davy, W.Va.

  •  A group is seeking to form a Galax historical society to help explore and find local history and research genealogy. 

    Barbara Trammell, Galax Public Library Director Melanie Hemingway and local historian John Nunn are hoping to pull a group together for an exploratory meeting at the Galax library on Jan. 5 at 1 p.m. to see if enough are interested to begin historical and genealogy clubs, specific to the history of Galax. 

    Anyone interested in local history or genealogy can attend. 

  •  She was so nervous and her heart was pounding so fast, Deana Richardson of Galax can't remember half of what happened as she ran from the audience to contestant row when she was asked to "Come on down" on "The Price is Right" on Oct. 4. 

    But, she will get to see her reaction when the episode airs at 11 a.m. on CBS on Monday.

  •  The Blue Ridge Parkway has sustained in Carroll County a "globally rare" flower, because "America's Favorite Drive" also preserves the plant's habitat.

    Field botanist Nancy Van Alstine of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation found the Cuthbert turtlehead on a rare plant survey in early September along a streamhead near the parkway.

  • Jenny Andrea Grabman and Jack Maurice Bird were united in marriage July 24, 2010, at Grayson Highlands State Park. The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Ty Harrison. Special music was provided by Joyce Rouse and Larry Paluzzi.
    The bride is the daughter of Lawrence and Sandra Grabman of Galax. She is the granddaughter of Elaine Vater‑Dillon of Independence.

    The groom is the son of David Bird of Bradenton, Fla., and Henry and Joan Bolduc of Elk Creek.

  • Teresa Faye Hill and Johnny Ramey were united in marriage at Comers Rock under an oak tree at 2 p.m. Aug. 28.
    Donna Anderson was maid of honor and Andy Wilson was best man.

    Attending the ceremony were the bride’s daughter, LeAnn Alderman; her son, Travis Hill; and her grandson, Jackson Alderman.
    Also attending were the groom’s daughter, Alison Hash, her children Eli and Colby Hash, and friend Jason Hash.
