  • Hope Gaynor, Timber Mundy and Taelyn Mundy announced the engagement of their mother, Tammy Liddle of Woodlawn, to John Utt of Fancy Gap.

  • The Galax Volunteer Fire Department’s annual carnival will be held this year from June 23-28 at Felts Park, with rides provided by Michael’s on the Midway.

    Gates open at 5 p.m., followed by the bingo and the carnival at 6 p.m. Bingo will have a 50 percent payout for each game. There will be a $1,000 championship game on Saturday night for qualifying players.

    Fireworks will be held on June 28 at 11 p.m. and again on July 4 at 10 p.m.

    The Great American Duck Race will also be held on July 4 at 10 a.m. in Chestnut Creek. Tickets are $5.

  • “Memories on Main” car show in downtown Galax proved quite a draw for vintage, antique and custom car enthusiasts this year. Along with the cars, entertainment was provided by local group Loose Strings, along with food, book and license plate vendors.

    On hand to greet showgoers was Michigan’s Scott “Scooter” Strenzel, a car magazine journalist and author of the “Scooter’s Garage” column, who was there to give out a special award and write articles about the event and various articles on display.

  • Smoke on the Mountain, Galax’s annual barbecue contest, has drawn fierce but friendly competitors for a decade. This year, the stakes have been raised.
    “We just received an email from the Memphis Barbecue Network in the last month,” said Smoke on the Mountain Site Director Ron Passmore.

  • INDEPENDENCE — A graduating class of 136 students received diplomas on May 31 at Grayson County High School — and some have completed two years of community college already.

  • Jafon Hairston celebrated his sixth birthday May 7 at home with his family and friends. He is the son of Beth Price and Antionne Hairston.

    His grandparents are Garold and Blenda Bilbrey and Alan Price. His great-grandparents are Violet Akers, Garnett and the late Helen Price. He has an aunt Samantha and Uncle Travis.

  • Ember Lynn Gillespie celebrated her first birthday with family and friends at a Lady Bug themed party May 3. Her parents are Brock and Terri Gillespie.

    Her older siblings are Brooklyn and Jackson. Her grandparents are Mark and Darlene Gillespie and Larry and Kathy Funk.

  • Amber Nicole Jackson and Patrick Isaac Hill announce their upcoming wedding at 6 p.m. June 20 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, Fries.

    Jackson is the daughter of Mike and Danita Jackson and Lori and Darnell Williams. She is a 2006 graduate of Carroll County High School.
    Hill is the son of Donald Hill and Katrina Waller Hill.
    He is a 2007 graduate of Grayson County High School.
    Both are employed by Wal-Mart of Galax.
    Friends and family are invited.
