  • Tiffany Janise Jones and Kriston Drew Nelson were united in marriage May 19 at Powder Mill Pond in Elk Creek in an afternoon Hawaiian-themed ceremony with family and friends.
    The Rev. Bobby Lorton of Radford officiated the double-ring ceremony.
    The bride is the daughter of Jimmy and Michele Jones of Independence. She is the granddaughter of Virginia Ruth Sutherland of Fries and the late Claiborne Sutherland and the late Henry and Janie Jones.

  • FRIES — Local artist Chad Tate and his crew of maniacs have created a truly terrifying haunted house at the Fries Recreation Center this year.
    The Scream Asylum opened Oct. 19, with a massive “Pumpkin King” greeting visitors outside the rec center, complete with a light-up head Tate carved out of a foam block. The wood and chicken wire monstrosity also billows smoke from its head.

  • Phyllis Elizabeth Hickam and Gregory James Milans were married Aug. 10, 2012, riverside at the New River Lodge in Galax.
    The double-ring ceremony was performed by Sam Bartlett, pastor of First Baptist Church of Galax.

    The bride is the daughter of Nancy Dixon Hickam of Galax and Jim Hickam, Jr., of Charlotte, N.C.
    She is a graduate of Galax High School and Roanoke College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in business administration. She is employed by West Health Institute in La Jolla, Calif.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Garnett Junior Lineberry of Woodlawn were honored with a celebration at their home church, Mount Zion Primitive Baptist, on Aug. 12.

    The couple was married on Aug. 2, 1952. They have five children and 11 grandchildren. 
    Family, friends, and the church family honored the couple with a celebration of love and treasured memories.

  • Mr. and Mrs. Walter Davis, Vanada Sue Brannock and Timmy Brannock announce the marriage of their children, Douglas Wayne Davis and Angel Lynn Brannock on June 9, 2012 at Camp Zion Church. The Rev. Sam Blevins officiated.
    The bride was given in marriage by her family and uncle Rickie Newman.

    Matron of honor was Tammy Stone, sister of the bride.
    Best man was Jamie Davis Sr., brother of the groom.
    Bridesmaids were Tina Davis, sister-in-law of the groom, Heather Oneal, Samantha Thomas and Echo Baskett.

  • Billy Mitchell of Galax devoted much of his life to helping the Lions Club, until his health forced him to stop. Last week, the club honored his service.

  • When Galax High School alumnus Harold Eugene Leonard passed away last year, he left a list of generous bequests to several organizations, including the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education.

  • HILLSVILLE — Of the dozen or so dogs and one cat in attendance at the Blessing of the Animals Saturday, Stephanie Burnette thought her companion might be the poster child.
    Maddie had been diagnosed with cancer in June, and Burnette learned that the dog might have days or weeks to live.
    Despite that, Maddie continues to hang on and to receive treatment for her malady.
    “She plays,” Burnette said. “She enjoys life. To me, it’s been a miracle, an absolute miracle.”

  • Ralph and Rhonda Hodge of Fries announce the engagement of their daughter, Angel Michelle Hodge, to Justin Rodney Vaughan, son of Rodney and Edna Vaughan of Fries.
    Hodge is the granddaughter of the late Staley and Donna Lee Hodge and the late Wayne and Addie Bobbitt.

    She is a 2003 graduate of Grayson County High School and a 2007 graduate of Virginia Tech. Hodge has a bachelor’s degree in communication and is employed by Brazzell Marketing Agency in Galax.
