  • HILLSVILLE — Of the dozen or so dogs and one cat in attendance at the Blessing of the Animals Saturday, Stephanie Burnette thought her companion might be the poster child.
    Maddie had been diagnosed with cancer in June, and Burnette learned that the dog might have days or weeks to live.
    Despite that, Maddie continues to hang on and to receive treatment for her malady.
    “She plays,” Burnette said. “She enjoys life. To me, it’s been a miracle, an absolute miracle.”

  • Ralph and Rhonda Hodge of Fries announce the engagement of their daughter, Angel Michelle Hodge, to Justin Rodney Vaughan, son of Rodney and Edna Vaughan of Fries.
    Hodge is the granddaughter of the late Staley and Donna Lee Hodge and the late Wayne and Addie Bobbitt.

    She is a 2003 graduate of Grayson County High School and a 2007 graduate of Virginia Tech. Hodge has a bachelor’s degree in communication and is employed by Brazzell Marketing Agency in Galax.

  • Ray Belton will celebrate his 80th birthday Oct. 11. He and his wife, Dorothy, have been married 57 years.

    They have four children: Kenneth Belton, Janice Warf, Wanda Wingate and Bobby Elliott.

  • Cyndi Leigh Wright and Timothy Adam Linkous were married at 7 p.m. May 26 at Asbury United Methodist Church in Rural Retreat.
    The Rev. Larry A. Linkous Sr., father of the groom, performed the ceremony.

    The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard “Butch” Wright of Rural Retreat. Her grandparents are Ms. Okey King and the late George King and Mr. and Mrs. Charles “Puffy” Wright of Rural Retreat. She is a dental assistant in King, N.C.

  • Camryn Paige Smith celebrated her first birthday on Aug. 19, 2012, with family and friends. She had a Pink Hippo party at Grayson County Recreation Park.

    She is the daughter of Tim and Melissa Smith and the sister of Ashley and Haleigh Smith and Jenna Turner. Her grandparents are Bill and Frances Smith and Gilbert and Donna Suitt.

  • Alvin and Ruby Roberts of Independence celebrated their 85th birthdays on Sept. 25 and Sept. 10. A birthday party was given Sept. 15 in their honor by family members. The couple has been married 65 years.

  • Krysta Lynette Webster and Jonathan Rupert Fink were united in marriage  May 19 by Professor James Rupert Fink, father of the groom, at 6 p.m. at The Osbornes in Florence, S.C., in front of 135 family members, friends, and guests.
    The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Darwin Ronald Webster of Dillon, S.C. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Ray Carter, also of Dillon and the late John Darwin and Elizabeth Webster of Dillon.

  • The members of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department take their motto to heart.
    “Pride in Our Past, Dedicated to the Future” is emblazoned on signs and trucks, but it’s more than words.
    As for the pride in the past, firefighters speak reverently of those who came before, building the organization from a bucket brigade to a fire company in 1912, after much of the city’s wood buildings were destroyed by fire.
