  • Edward and Phyllis Barker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 18.

    A celebration brunch was held at 104 Main in Galax with children, grandchildren and siblings.  
    The Barkers moved to Galax in 1967, where Ed worked as a pharmacist for People’s Drug Store.
    They have 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

  • Charles and Wilma Worrell of Woodlawn celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 14.

    They have one son and daughter-in-law — Charles David and Carol Jean Worrell of Woodlawn.

  • Seniors 50 and older in the Twin County area have an opportunity to participate in the first-ever Twin County Senior Olympics on Sept. 14 and 15, but time is running out to register.
    The deadline for registration is this Friday — Aug. 31.
    The recreation departments from Carroll, Galax and Grayson, along with the Hillsville Rotary Club and Carroll Wellness Center, have teamed up to sponsor the Olympics. “They have worked very hard to make this a reality for us,” said Dennis Ward of Hillsville, the event’s organizer.

  • WOODLAWN — Three years ago, when the Joy Ranch children’s home in Carroll County added a quilt auction and children’s inflatables to its annual open house and alumni reunion, organizers wanted a catchy name and an appealing attraction for the newly created event.
    Thus “JoyFest” began, with the theme of “Up!” in its first year and hot-air ballooning activities as its leading feature.

  • Roby Ellis Edwards and Loretta Edwards celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 30, 2012.

  • Taelynn Isabella Mundy celebrated her second birthday July 2 with a party at McDonald’s. Her sisters Hope Gaynor and Timber Mundy helped her celebrate along with special friends and family members.

    She is the daughter of Tammy L. Liddle and Tim L. Mundy of Woodlawn. Maternal grandparents are Brenda Liddle and Emory Bearden of Woodlawn, and Charles Liddle of Galax. Paternal grandparents are Don and Mabelene Beverly of Cana, and Wayne Mundy of Cana.

  • Cassidy “Cassie” Lynne Marshall turned 1 on July 23. Her birthday was celebrated with a butterfly cookout at the river. She is the daughter of Joseph and Chrissy Marshall.

    Her big sister is Izzie Marshall. Grandparents are Randy and Kim Bell and Dennis and Opie Marshall. Great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell, the late Verna Liddle, O’Neal and O’Needa Terry, and the late Virgil and  Patty Marshall.

  • Jimmy and Rita Vernon of Cana announced the engagement of their daughter, Cleo Anne Vernon, to Gerald Ray Goad, son of Elmon and Karen Goad of Galax.
    Cleo is a 2010 graduate of Carroll County High School and a 2012 graduate of Wytheville Community College.

    She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in professional communications at Old Dominion University while employed as a part-time teller at Carter Bank & Trust in Hillsville.

  • Jeff and Janet Evans of Fieldale announced the engagement of their daughter, Charity Faith Evans of Martinsville, to Jay Michael Havens of Ridgeway.
    He is the son of Mike Havens and the late Beth Havens of Ridgeway.

    Evans graduated from Victory International Christian Academy in 2009.
    She is the granddaughter of Bob and Mary Brown of Hillsville and Willis and Penny Evans of Galax and the late Jack Dale Harmon of Martinsville.
    Evans is employed as a supervisor at Chick-Fil-A in Martinsville.

  • Curtis and Sue Andrews of Galax celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a month-long road trip to Alaska. They saw wildlife, glaciers and mountains that were amazing.

    They cruised through Alaska’s Inside Passage.
