  • HILLSVILLE  — Around 50 churches hope to welcome more than 1,500 participants to Christian Family Fun Day Sept. 22.
    The majority of activities will take place at the Grover King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1115 after a 10:30 a.m. kick-off parade on Main Street travels to the post grounds.

  • Ethan Surbaugh celebrated his first birthday in Hickory, N.C., with his parents and friends. His parents are Chris and Amy Surbaugh.

    His grandparents are Victor and Pam Cox. His great-grandparents are Reuben and Estelle Hawks and Eugene and Doris Martin.

  • Wayne and Ila Mae Hensdell celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary June 23.

    A celebration with nearly 60 family and friends was held at Waddell Nursing and Rehab Center.
    They were married June 28, 1942 in Independence.

  • Breanna Lynn McMillian celebrated her fourth birthday Aug. 25. Her parents are Glen and Rebecca McMillian of Cana.

    Her paternal grandparents are the late Donald and Cathy McMillian of Cana. Her maternal grandparents are James Bevins of Mount Airy, N.C., and Brenda Carter of Cana. She has two aunts, Chasity McMillian and Tina Carter.

  • Don and Cheryl Quesenberry of Hillsville along with Josh and Dreama Viers of Abingdon announce the engagement of their children, Brandon Quesenberry and Nicole Viers.
    Quesenberry is the grandson of Clyde and Faye Lineberry of Hillsville and Darlen and the late Ernest Quesenberry of Sylvatus.

    He is a 2002 graduate of Carroll County High School. He completed entry-level law enforcement academy in 2010 and is a police officer for the Hillsville Police Department.

  • Writer Michael Abraham talks about “Providence, VA,” the story of a massive power outage that strikes the Galax area and forces people into self-reliance.

  • Hundreds of African-American students from Galax, Grayson and Carroll were bused to Scott Memorial and Wytheville Training School until public schools were fully integrated in the early 1960s. The schools held their 60th reunion this weekend.

  • HILLSVILLE — Shoppers by the thousands are expected to descend on the Hillsville gun show and flea market, as well as the Sylvatus flea market and numerous yard sales, this weekend.
    Roads in the vicinity are expected to be clogged with shoppers galore, so the Virginia Department of Transportation issued the following traffic advisory.
    Travelers heading to the annual Labor Day weekend flea market should be prepared for considerable traffic delays.

  • Austin David Hauslohner and Shannon Michelle Gravely of Galax announced their engagement and forthcoming marriage.

    Gravely is the daughter of Kern McCoy Gravely Jr. and the late Kathy Ann Gravely of Galax. She is a 2005 graduate of Galax High School and is employed as floral manager at Food City in Galax.

  • Edward and Phyllis Barker celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 18.

    A celebration brunch was held at 104 Main in Galax with children, grandchildren and siblings.  
    The Barkers moved to Galax in 1967, where Ed worked as a pharmacist for People’s Drug Store.
    They have 4 children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
