  • Djamani Peyton Ashland Young celebrated her third birthday Sept. 20 with a Lady Bug party with family and friends at home.

    Her sister, Jacory Madison Brooklyn Young, turned one March 18. Their parents are Joedy and Desmine Young.

    They also have two sisters, Jordan and Bryanna. Grandparents are Marcellous and Mary Martin, the late Frank Simpson and Cindy Townes and the late Isom Young. Great-grandparents are Sena R. Jackson and Floyd and Beatrice Spicer.

  • Harold Combs of Independence celebrated his 80th birthday on Nov. 17, 2011.

    He is a Korean War veteran. He and his wife, Edie, have daughters Patti and Susie and four granddaughters, one grandson, three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

  • The Galax Y’s Men’s Club is in its 25th year of coordinating the annual Community Christmas Chest Fund that provides food for 550 needed families in the area during the holidays.
    The fundraising goal this year is $30,000 to buy the food, which provides two large boxes filled with staples for each family at a cost of $55 per family.
    The Galax V’s Men’s Club asks the community to continue to bond together in support of the fundraising goal as in the past.

  • Madalyn Gregory turned 5 years old on Oct. 11. She celebrated with a special birthday party at home on Oct. 11 with her daddy and mama, and a Halloween-themed party on Oct. 29 with family and friends.

    She is the daughter of Jimmie and Whitney Gregory of Fries; the granddaugter of William and Vergie Lundy, Eddie and Brenda Ward, Shirley Ward all of Independence, John and Frances Pierce of Fries, and Jacky Testerman of Lansing, N.C.

  • Roger and Peggy Shaw Sumner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 1, 2011. They were married September 29, 1961, at Camp Zion Church by Lonnie P. Shaw.

    Their children — Lisa Mitchell of Raleigh, N.C., Brad Sumner of Atlanta, and Carmen Sumner of Lincolnton, N.C. — hosted a party at Locust Grove Church Fellowship Hall. Also attending were their two grandchildren, Charlie and Molly Mitchell of Raleigh. Many family and friends helped celebrate the memorable occasion.

  • Palin Leanne Snider turned two Aug. 11. She celebrated Aug. 6 with a party at her home with family and friends. Her parents are Curtis and Lorie Snider.

    She has two sisters, Paisley and Blair Snider. Her grandparents are Danny and Linda Deskins of Dugspur and Harold and Joyce Snider of Dublin and the late Kathy Snider. Great-grandparents are Pauline Marshall of Laurel Fork and Frieda Deskins of Hillsville. She has a special aunt, Holly Choate.

  • Robby Alan Hill and Brooke Nicole Reedy were united in marriage on Aug. 6, 2011, at Snow Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Ernie Smith performed the double-ring ceremony.
    The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents, Brian and Kim Reedy of Fairview.

    Her maternal grandparents are Caroll Harrison and the late Vena Ree Harrison of Elkhorn. Paternal grandparents are Bill and Claudine Reedy of Fairview.
    The groom’s parents are Ricky and Anna Hill of Galax.
