  • Praisin' in the Park returns

    For Jennifer Morris, coordinator of the 3rd Annual Praisin' in the Park community Bible school, it's about bringing churches together, watching kids make friends and seeing them get to know Jesus.
    Praisin' in the Park, a free event for rising kindergartners through rising sixth graders, will be held July 25-29 in Felts Park in Galax. The community  celebration will begin on Sunday, from 4-7 p.m., with a night of family activities featuring food, games, inflatables and live Christian music from local bands.

  • Galax Book Club to hold annual sale

    The Galax Book Club will hold its annual book sale Aug. 11-14 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, except 10 a.m.-noon on Aug. 14.

    The sale will be in the lower level of Antique Apple on Main Street in Galax. Adult fiction and non-fiction hardback and paperback books, as well as juvenile books and videos, will be sold. The Galax Book Club will contribute all proceeds to the Galax Public Library to use for new books and/or materials to assist the library program.

    Smith shouldn't sell himself short. While the Haddock, Ga., team — this year's grand champion of the 6th Annual Smoke On The Mountain state barbecue cook-off in Galax, held this past weekend — looks at cooking as fun, there's some sweet science involved.

  • Grayson Street to 'Groove' on Friday

    The second Groovin’ on Grayson cruise-in and concert series of the summer will be held  Friday with hundreds of antique and classic cars, motorcycles and antique farm equipment lining the streets of downtown Galax and live music at the outdoor Grayson Street stage with The Night Move Band.
    The Night Move Band of North Carolina performs R&B, beach, classic rock, funk, and country music and features four-part harmonies on many of the songs.

  • Relay for Life steps up this weekend

    The 2010 Relay For Life of Galax and Carroll County begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Carroll County High School football field.
    The survivors’ lap begins at 6:30 and registration begins at 5 at the survivors’ reception tent.
    A survivors’ meal will be served July 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the VFW Building in Hillsville.
    The event begins with a lap-walk in which all survivors are cheered on by well-wishers. Next is a lap in honor of those who have cared for loved ones who battled cancer.

  • Local author plans book signings

    John Nunn will appear at two Galax book signings this weekend for the Galax history book he co-authored with his sister, Judith Nunn Alley.
    Nunn will sign copies of “Galax” at Snickerdoodles from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, 122 S. Main St.; and at Magic Mart on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., 1077 E. Stuart Drive.
    The book includes more than 200 vintage images from the first 50 years of Galax, and is the most recent addition to the popular “Images of America” series from Arcadia Publishing.

  • Hallelujah Luau returns to Galax this weekend

    Thirty area churches and numerous businesses are joining forces to present the fourth annual Hallelujah Luau in Galax.
    The event is scheduled for Saturday at Felts Park, with gates opening at 10 a.m. and the opening ceremonies beginning at 11 a.m. with the National Anthem followed by the honoring of military veterans. The event will last until 5 p.m.

  • Summer fun on the Blue Ridge Parkway

    The first day of summer on the Blue Ridge Parkway was warm, extraordinarily sunny and quiet. Maybe a little too quiet.
    "When does the travel season begin?" wondered Debra Anker, a parkway visitor from Fredericksburg, whose family had stopped at a visitors’ center on their way home from North Carolina.
    "It's very quiet today. I don't mind having the road to ourselves."
