    Her parents are Jimmie and Whitney Gregory, sister Madalyn and brother Parker. Her grandparents are Eddie and Brenda Ward of Independence and John and Frances Pierce of Fries.

  • Melody Denise Mallinson and Caleb Lee Shealor were joined in marriage March 15, 2015, in an intimate ceremony at Bogey’s on the seventh green in Galax.
    The ceremony was officiated by Pastor Derek Cowan.

    The bride is the daughter of Keith and Debi Mallinson of Independence. She is the granddaughter of Gil and Shelby Wetmore and the great-granddaughter of Dot Blevins, all of Independence.
    She is a graduate of Grayson County High School and attends Wytheville community College. She is a manager at Chic-Fil-A.

  • Donald and Juanita (Parnell) Flanagan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary April 17.

    Both are retired from Sara Lee.

  • WOODLAWN — The summer schedule for The Studio in Woodlawn will include a variety of classes and workshops, as well as a series of self-protection classes and concealed carry firearms classes.

    Located across from the Midway Shell station on Carrollton Pike in Woodlawn, The Studio opened earlier this year with a hodgepodge of choices for clients, including yoga classes, children’s theater and venue rentals. But as business owner DeeDee Wright mapped out plans for her studio space, a new opportunity for promoting community safety was presented.

  • William Cayson Sluss turned one on Feb. 25. He celebrated his birthday Feb. 28 at Fairview Church with a Mickey Mouse Club house theme, with family and friends. He is the son of Scott and Cindy Sluss of Galax.

    He has a brother, Brandon Sluss; and a sister, Madison Sluss. His grandparents are Robert and Regina Lundy of Ennice, N.C., and Bud and Pat Sluss of Tazewell.

  • Jeremy and Kristi McCormick of Independence announced the engagement of their daughter, Darien Brooke McCormick, to Ethan Wayne Hash, son of Roger and Terrie Hash of Independence.

    A June 2015 wedding is planned.

  • Galax High School students showed off their unique styles at the 2015 prom, held May 2 at the Galax Golf Course country club.

    INDEPENDENCE — About 300 danced the night away at Grayson County High School’s annual Junior-Senior Prom on April 25.

    The prom’s theme this year was “If Only for One Night.” The event was coordinated by GCHS teacher Amanda Brewer, who was assisted by many volunteers.

  • HILLSVILLE — For Heather Ramirez, last year’s Second Chance Prom was her first real prom experience.

    “The funny part for me was that I wasn’t able to attend my first prom, but I helped decorate for it in high school,” she told The Gazette. “But it worked out, because the first time actually going to the prom, I went with my husband.”
