  • Foster Dean Frazier turned two on May 14. He is the son of Josh and Tina Frazier of Fancy Gap.

  • Love is set to pop up all over Virginia in many different and unexpected places as part of a new effort by the state tourism office to share the message that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation.
    Galax is one of only 11 destinations across the state chosen by the Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) to create a giant LOVE artwork to bring more family travelers to Virginia.

    Thousands of fans raced to Galax on Saturday to meet the stars and cars of the TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” in Felts Park. The event sponsored by Greg’s Core Supply, a local business.

    Several actors from the 1979-1985 show attended the second annual “Hazzard Comes to Galax" event, including  John Schneider (Bo Duke), Ben Jones (Cooter), Rick Hurst (Deputy Cletus), James Best (Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane) and Sonny Shroyer (Deputy Enos Strait).

  • LoRee Blevins Smith celebrated 80th birthday May 8 at her home in the Snowhill Community with her family.

  • Kelsey Lynn Jones celebrated her first birthday March 31 with family and friends. S

    he is the daughter of Jody and Debbie Jones of Hillsville and the sister of Casey Jones. Her grandparents are Harry and Brenda Jones of Fries and C.C. and Katie Dalton of Hillsville.

  • Concetta Nicole Sotile and Joshua Lee Hancock announced their engagement and upcoming June 16 wedding at Galax Pentecostal Holiness Church.
    Sotile is a 2009 graduate of Carroll County High School. She attended Wytheville Community College and plans to start at Bluefield College this fall.

    She is the daughter of Debra Dalton of Hillsville and Greg Sotile of Colorado Springs, Colo.
    Hancock is a 2007 graduate of New Life Christian Academy and 2012 graduate of Wytheville Community College.

  • Mike and Shirley Jones of Rural Retreat announce the engagement of their daughter Jessica Lauren to Robert Noah Sult, the son of Larry and Susan Sult of Fort Chiswell.

    A September wedding is planned at West Wind Farm.

  • John (Jack) F. Devine and Wanda celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary March 31 with family and friends at Hillcrest Baptist Church fellowship hall.

    The event was given by their children: daughters, Sandy Cox of Galax and Barbara (Bobbie) and Jerry Fridley of Galax; and son, Jack and Alice Devine of Independence.
    They have seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
    They thanked all who helped celebrate and who sent cards.

  • Jeff and Patti Holderfield of Galax, along with Mike and Becky Edmonds of Dugspur, announced the engagement of Laura Holderfield and Ray Edmonds.

    Holderfield is a 2008 graduate of Carroll County High School and a 2011 graduate of Virginia Tech with a degree in marketing management.
    She is employed at Samaritan’s Purse International Relief in Boone, N.C., as a marketing metrics analyst. 
    Holderfield is the granddaughter of Joe and Mary Alice Holderfield of Galax, and Tom and Dee Lineberry of Pipers Gap.
