  • FRIES — Although this year’s headcount for the Grayson County Relay for Life was small, the participants’ efforts were reflected in both their attitudes and the impressive amount of donations that were raised (almost $19,000) for the continuing fight against cancer.

    According to Dreama Underwood, the event chair for the relay, four teams raised a total of $18,893.76, as of last Friday. Money was still coming in this week.

  • HILLSVILLE — Cosplay, Magic card tournaments, action figures, stormtroopers… all of these features may seem reminiscent of the almighty San Diego Comic-Con, a four-day event in California that fans of video games, comic books, fantasy characters and the like flock to by the thousands each year.

    This event, and others like it across the country provide a safe haven for die-hard fans.

  • Galax hosted the 11th Annual Smoke on the Mountain state barbecue championship on July 17-18, with nearly 40 teams from all over the country competing, along with local cooks both amateur and professional.

    In addition to the state championship, the cookoff is a qualifying event for two major barbecue circuits, and the grand champion also earns entry into the World Food Competition.

  • Lee Kegley recently celebrated his 90th birthday at a Kegley/Higgins family reunion at Mt. Vale Church in Galax.

  • Melda B. Hill celebrated her 90th birthday June 21 with a party at Bogey’s hosted by her five children.

    Among the 33 in attendance were a host of grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

  • Jonas Lynn Stockner turned age 1 on April 28. He celebrated at a party with family and friends. Jonas is the son of Zeth and Ashley Stockner.

    His grandparents are Tommy and Cherie Stockner, and Junior and Tammey Osborne. His big brother is Jaxson Stockner.

  • Margareta Valcu of Bucharest, Romania and Dr. Robert and Theresa Lazo of Galax announced the engagement of their children, Cristine Nicolescu Waggonner and James Linden Stone Lazo, of Los Angeles, Calif.

    A September wedding is planned in Elk Creek.

  • Edgar and Pauline Jones of Galax recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married June 11, 1955.

    They have two children, Daniel Ray Jones of Galax and Linda Robinson of Hillsville. The Galax Church of God of Prophecy helped with the celebration.

  • Jennifer and David Burnette celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary July 4.

    They were married July 4, 1990.

  • Lura Bartlett, a resident at Waddell Nursing & Rehab Center, recently celebrated her 100th birthday. A party was held in her honor on June 11th, with family coming in as far away as Nashville, Tenn.

    Family and friends all had a great time celebrating Bartlett’s 100 years. When asked what attributed to her long life, she stated, “I don’t know. I guess I have good genes.”
