    Forty years ago, Twin County Regional Hospital opened its doors for the first time to begin a new effort of community-oriented healthcare.
    Today, through its many changes, the staff hopes to continue serving the community through a growing affiliation with Duke LifePoint.

  • Oakland Elementary School celebrated their annual Festival of Culture on Oct. 17. Students and their families were invited to a potluck dinner featuring dishes from different cultures, followed by an evening of fun games and entertainment.

  • Levi Kristopher Ward turned two years old on Oct. 4. He celebrated with a Mickey Mouse party at his home. He is the sons of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence and has an older brother, Braeden.

    Their grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley, and Harvey and Jill Ward. Their great-grandparents are Agnes Cox, Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

  • Breanna Lynn McMillian turned five Aug. 25. She celebrated her birthday with family and friends. Her father is Glen McMillian of Cana. Her mother is Rebecca McMillian of Lambsburg.

    Her paternal grandparents are the late Donald and Cathy McMillian of Cana. Her maternal grandparents are Brenda Carter of Cana and James Bevins of Mount Airy, N.C. She has an aunt, chasity McMillian.

  • Katheryn Regina Jones of Galax and Mark Allen Miller of Fries were united in marriage June 8, 2012, at West Galax United Methodist Church. Pastor Sam Bartlett officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of Tommy and Rhonda Jones. She is the granddaughter of Maudie Horton and the late Rush Horton, and of the late Arlyss and Ella Mae Jones.

    The groom is the son of Roger and Sharon Miller. He is the grandson of Geneva Leonard and the late Horace Leonard, and the late Worth and Ardean Miller.

  • CANA — St. Paul’s beloved librarian will continue to have an impact on the school and the community where she taught and touched the lives of students for 37 years.
    Joyce Slate had enough time in her career to make a generational impact on St. Paul students and on their sons and daughters, as she encouraged reading, sponsored the yearbook, documented the school year with her camera, took children on field trips and threw fundraising events to be able to afford those trips.

  • FRIES — The Fries Volunteer Fire Department hosted a ranch rodeo and horse show on Oct. 11 and 12 at the Providence School grounds, featuring plenty of competitions and entertainment for visitors of all ages.

    Competitors from every skill level galloped into the ring, from stick ponies to racing steeds.

  • Josie Criner was honored with a party to celebrate her 90th birthday Aug. 16 at Fairview Baptist Church.

  • Haleigh Grace Smith celebrated her first birthday Aug. 26. She celebrated with a cookout at her home with special friends and family.

    She is the daughter of Cory and Elena Smith of Austinville. Paternal grandparents are Charles and Sue Smith of Fries. Maternal grandparents are Doug and Glenda Forester of Galax and the late James “Jimmy” Brewer Sr. of Fries. Great-grandmother is Blanche Payne of Whitetop.

  • Jacob Lane Huff turned one Oct. 9. He is the son of Joshua and Jennifer Huff of Galax. He has a sister Marella Huff of Galax.

    Paternal grandparents are Gary and Brenda Huff. Maternal grandparents are John and Mary Davis. Paternal great-grandparents are Alma Sizemore and Inez Huff. Maternal great-grandparents are John “Bill” and Shirley Davis, all of Galax. Family and friends will celebrate Huff’s birthday with a Farm party Oct. 11.
