  • Robert Ted and Glenda Light celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today, Dec. 20.

    They were married in 1963 at the Blue Ridge Chapel with the Rev. John D. Bowman officiating. They reside at 171 Cedar Pt., in Galax. They will be celebrating with family and friends.

  • Brenda and Eugene Lundy will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Saturday.
    The couple were married Dec. 21, 1963, at First Bible Brethren Church in Galax. The Rev. Otte Utt, father of the bride, officiated.

    The couple have one son, Brian Mark Lundy of Galax, and granddaughters Hannah and Cassidy Lundy of King, N.C.

  • Chief David C. Hankley of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department submitted this letter to The Gazette about the Community Christmas Food Fund, which the department took on as a project this year:

    On behalf of the Galax Fire Department and Y’s Men Club, I want to thank our community for the great support that we received for the Community Christmas Food Fund.
    On Dec. 19, we had over 200 people swarm the fire station to pack the food boxes. Because each of the 550 families will receive two boxes, there were actually 1,100 boxes to pack.

  • Backpack Buddies participants at Gladeville Elementary get grocery bags stuffed with care, to ensure the family receives plenty of Christmas fare.
    The 23 items packed often overflowed, and the students had to carry home quite a load.
    The Mount Olivet United Methodist Church women’s group spearheads it, so during the holidays the families don’t have to fret.

  • Kaitlyn Grace Clontz turned two on Sept 4. She celebrated with a My Little Pony Party at Dannelly Park in Galax with family and friends and big sister, Kaylee Clontz (right).

    She is the daughter of Danielle Clontz of Fries. Her grandparents are Tim and Rebecca Clontz of Fries. Her great-grandparents are the late James and Nancy Clontz of Galax and Boyd and Ileen Trimble of Fries. Her favorite and special uncle is Eric Clontz of Fries.

  • Jaxson Preston Stockner turned age 2 on Nov. 16. He celebrated by playing basketball and having a tractor-themed party at the Galax Recreation Center with family and friends.

    He is the son of Zeth and Ashley Stockner. His grandparents are Tommy and Cherie Stockner and Junior and Tammey Osborne.

  • The City of Galax’s annual parade and community tree lighting ceremony kicks off the Christmas season on Friday, followed by three parades and other holiday events on Saturday in Hillsville, Independence and Fries.
    The Galax Christmas Parade will be begin at Police Square on North Main Street in downtown Galax this Friday night. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with Christmas music, followed by the lighting of the tree at 6:30 p.m.
    The parade, which travels south down Main Street, will follow at 7 p.m.

  • James Breece Rotten (J.B.) celebrated his fifth birthday Oct. 12 at Blue Ridge Lanes with family and friends.

    His parents are Mike and Kristy Roten of Galax. Grandparents are Breece and Carol Roten of Galax and Tom and Gloria Anderson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Great-grandmothers are Opal Robinson of Galax and Patricia Lamantia of Arizona.
