  • Braeden Hunter Ward turned 8 years old on June 26. He celebrated with a Lego Batman Pool Party at Grayson Rec Park.

    He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence. He has three younger brothers: Levi, Luke and Grayson. Braeden’s grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley, and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward, and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

  • Community Halloween events are planned throughout the Twin Counties on Tuesday. Here are some of the fun and frightful festivities scheduled for Oct. 31:

    HILLSVILLE

    Hillsville’s Safe Halloween, held downtown at various venues.

    The annual event allows parents and family to bring their children to a safe community function for trick-or-treating activities.

    Many of the businesses in downtown Hillsville stay open late for the event. There are games, hay rides, a haunted house and food.

  • Chapters Bookshop, located in downtown Galax, is a winner of the national 2017 Children’s Book Week Contest.

    In celebration of the 98th anniversary of Children’s Book Week, 705 libraries, schools and bookstores were invited in May to enter a national display contest around the theme of “One World, Many Stories.”

  • Matthew Baker celebrated his third birthday June 19, 2017, with family and friends. He is the son of Seth and Larissa Baker.

    His grandparents are Donny and Becky Haynes, Donnie and Kathy Baker and Kathy Halsey. His great-grandparents are James and Pattie Bolt, Betty Haynes, Bob and Alice Baker and Vivian Wilson. Special friends are David and Kim Stamper.

  • Grayson Bo Ward turned one year old on June 7. He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence.

  • Guy and June Bowman have lived in the Woodlawn area since marriage and have three children, Sue, Libby and Tommy; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

  • INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County students and alumni took to social media last week, posting condolences and statements in memory of the Rev. Clarence Bonnell Young — known by many as “Doc” — a former band director for the school system who passed away Sept. 13, at age 57.

    HILLSVILLE — Henry Lindsey, a Carroll County soldier in the 29th Virginia lnfantry, wrote to his wife: “I drawed soap today for the first time — about the size of a hen egg. We have to pay $1.50 per lb. for soap to wash our clothes.”

    His wife Polly, writing from their home in the Dugspur area, replied to Henry: “Times are very hard in Carroll and everything is scarce and powerful high: pork $1.50 a lb., butter $3, wheat $15...”

  • Nolan Jay Spurlin celebrated his fifth birthday on Aug. 8, 2017, and his brother Luke Ryan Spurlin celebrated his third birthday on Aug. 29, 2017.

    They are the sons of Jason Spurlin and Jill Cockerham. Their grandparents are Mike and Anita Spurlin of Baywood and Danny and Carolyn Cockerham of Galax. Great-grandparents are Louise Diamond and Rubye Cockerham, both of Galax.

  • The children of James and Jeanie Davis request the attendance of family and friends on Sept. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Independence First United Methodist Church to honor and celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
