  • Tuggle headed to Chile on mission trip

    An Elk Creek man will travel to Chile for about two weeks as part of a Gideon International Mission Trip.
    Ralph Tuggle — who will celebrate his 73rd birthday mid-flight during a trip that begins today, Friday — is one of 23 Gideons from the U.S., Australia and Finland traveling to Chile. The volunteers will work alongside 75 to 100 Chilean Gideons to place Bibles and scriptures there in different venues.

    INDEPENDENCE — The table is set and waiting for those in need of a home-cooked meal.
    On July 20, Independence First United Methodist Church — with assistance from area churches, organizations and volunteers — began offering “The Lamb's Table,” a Tuesday night supper at the church's fellowship hall from 5-6:30 p.m.

  • Praisin' in the Park returns

    For Jennifer Morris, coordinator of the 3rd Annual Praisin' in the Park community Bible school, it's about bringing churches together, watching kids make friends and seeing them get to know Jesus.
    Praisin' in the Park, a free event for rising kindergartners through rising sixth graders, will be held July 25-29 in Felts Park in Galax. The community  celebration will begin on Sunday, from 4-7 p.m., with a night of family activities featuring food, games, inflatables and live Christian music from local bands.

  • Hallelujah Luau returns to Galax this weekend

    Thirty area churches and numerous businesses are joining forces to present the fourth annual Hallelujah Luau in Galax.
    The event is scheduled for Saturday at Felts Park, with gates opening at 10 a.m. and the opening ceremonies beginning at 11 a.m. with the National Anthem followed by the honoring of military veterans. The event will last until 5 p.m.

  • Local churches helping out in Costa Rica

    When the Rev. Ricardo Alvarado, pastor of the Hispanic congregation at First Baptist Church of Galax, visited a halfway house in Costa Rica in March, he saw something he didn't know existed in his own country — a poorly pieced-together structure made from whatever wood and metal could be found.

    The floors were dirt and there were wood-sided outhouses nearby.

    Members of First Baptist Church of Galax, Hillsville Christian Church, First Baptist Church of Hillsville and Cornerstone Community Church in Galax are coming together to fix that situation.
