  • Dance conservatory presents 'Alice in Wonderland' ballet

    Who says ballet is stuffy and boring?
    Not anyone who saw The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre’s “Alice in Wonderland” ballet in Ashe County, N.C., on June 8.
    This weekend, the conservatory will bring the ballet version of “Alice” to the Galax High School auditorium for performances June 14 and 15 at 6 p.m.

  • GHS revives classic musical 'Guys & Dolls'

    Students at Galax High School have been hard at work bringing their characters to life for the Performing Arts Department’s presentation of “Guys and Dolls,” a musical that first hit Broadway in 1950.
    Based stories and characters by Damon Runyon, the show follows gambler Nathan Detroit, who is responsible for the longest running floating craps game in New York.

  • Hillsville celebrates Gospel Day

    HILLSVILLE — Organizers of the first-ever Hillsville/Carroll County Gospel Singing Day and classic car cruise in held last Saturday at Jail House Square in Hillsville a success.
    Organizer and Hillsville Town Council member David Young noted that several activities were going on June 1, including the arts and crafts vendor sale at the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter home.

  • Art school looks at past success, plans for future

    Chestnut Creek School of the Arts in Galax review its progress over the past year and looked ahead to a new woodworking studio at its most recent board meeting.
    For the school’s first year, 2011-2012, the school showed an overall growth of 173 percent. Documents shared with the CCSA board showed a significant rise in numbers in most of the categories, including Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) hours, outreach and on-demand usage, the Empty Bowls project, The Galax Art Guild and facility usage.

    The Arts Council of the Twin Counties’ production of “The Dixie Swim Club,” which opens May 30, follows the lives of five friends who met when they all joined the college swim team.

  • Art school raises $9,000 for woodworking shop

    Chestnut Creek School of the Arts celebrated its fourth annual fundraising Gala on April 13, with the theme "Hand-Crafted in Galax: A New Woodworking Studio for CCSA.”
    Guests were treated to music, hors d’oeuvres, wine sampling and a silent auction. Local artisans contributed unique works to be sold at the auction, such as paintings, sculptures, fabrics and woodwork.
    That night, CCSA’s gala helped to raise more than $9,000 through ticket sales, pre-gala donations and the silent auction for the school’s new woodworking studio.
