  • Fiddlers' convention history revealed

    "Let's try a musical program." With those immortal words in 1935, the Galax Moose Lodge launched a legendary annual event that has grown to the world's largest gathering of bluegrass and old time musicians and fans.

    Fiddlers' conventions have branched out to other areas over the years, but Galax is still revered as the oldest and largest convention in the world.

  • Fiddlers' contestant registration holds steady

    Registration for the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention is down only 17 contestants overall from 2012, the smallest drop in registration numbers in several years.
    The registration figures were released by the Galax Moose Lodge #733, organizers of the 78-year-old event, the world’s largest gathering of bluegrass and old-time fans and musicians.

  • Thousands of fiddlin' fans will pack park Sunday morning

    Galax’s population will soar in the coming week, as thousands of fiddlin’ fans descend on the city. Felts Park will open its gates at 7 a.m. Sunday for the 78th Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention. The competition opens Monday night and lasts through Aug. 10.
    Most of the convention’s expected 1,300 campers will show up Sunday to set up camp.

  • Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival & Guitar Competition is June 15

    If a lazy day atop one of Virginia’s highest mountains listening to the region’s best music sounds appealing, then the Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition is the place for you.
    It’s always on the third Saturday in June.
    The festival at Grayson Highlands State Park is an annual fundraiser for youth music scholarships. More than $47,000 has been awarded to aid young, local, traditional musicians in continuing their music education.

  • Rosanne Cash to perform at music center

    The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, in partnership with the Blue Ridge Parkway, has announced that singer, songwriter and author Rosanne Cash, along with guitarist John Leventhal, will headline a concert at the Blue Ridge Music Center on June 14, beginning at 7 p.m.
    The event complements the events of Galax’s Leaf & String Festival, which celebrates traditional mountain music.

  • Leaf & String celebrates music, literature and art

    The community is invited to join in the festivities at the 12th Annual Galax Leaf and String Festival, “a celebration of music, art and literature,” on Friday and Saturday in downtown Galax.
    Local artisans, musicians, authors and chefs will gather downtown to offer those in attendance a varied example of what the area has to offer.
    The event will be split into four sections, each located on a different street:

  • Galax siblings' books chronicle history of city

    John Nunn and Judy Nunn Alley are two of the featured local writers at this weekend's "Authors on Grayson" event, part of the Galax Leaf & String Festival.

  • Dance conservatory presents 'Alice in Wonderland' ballet

    Who says ballet is stuffy and boring?
    Not anyone who saw The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre’s “Alice in Wonderland” ballet in Ashe County, N.C., on June 8.
    This weekend, the conservatory will bring the ballet version of “Alice” to the Galax High School auditorium for performances June 14 and 15 at 6 p.m.
