  • Origins of 'Hillbilly' music found in Galax area

There’s no short answer to explain how “hillbillies” invented American music, local music historian Joe Wilson says.

It’s “all the pieces of the truth that fit together” that allow him to tell the story of where hillbilly music — old-time and, later, bluegrass — came from in about an hour, but the story is much deeper.

  • Tomorrow's talents take the stage

The 79th Annual Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention opened Aug. 4 with youth competition, showcasing the best up-and-coming artists in bluegrass and old-time music.

  • Fiddlers' convention registration drops by 141

Registration for the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention is down by 141 contestants from 2013, one of the largest drops in the past four years.

Registration numbers had been declining slowly but steadily for the past three years, after topping out at 2,004 contestants for the event’s 75 anniversary in 2010. This year’s total is 1,675.

The registration figures were released by the Galax Moose Lodge #733, organizers of the 79-year-old event, the world’s largest gathering of bluegrass and old-time fans and musicians.

  • Fiddlers will flock to Galax this weekend

Most of the convention’s expected 1,300 campers will show up Sunday to set up camp.

  • Play weds physical and verbal comedy

Things I did not know about tying the knot before seeing the comedy “Dearly Beloved,” the Galax Theatre Guild’s newest production:
    1. There’s nothing wrong with exchanging your vows outdoors between a crepe myrtle and a propane tank.
    2. Gospel trio sister acts are welcome entertainment at Texas weddings.
    3. Seven-layer dip sometimes has a life of its own.
