  • New Felts Park stage to be dedicated

     

    Construction crews met substantial completion of the new, permanent Felts Park stage a couple of weeks ago, and it is set to be dedicated on Saturday at 8 p.m. during the Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention. After the annual Poor Man's Dinner, which includes visits from various politicians, state representatives and local leaders at the picnic shelter at Felts Park, officials will take a tour of the new stage, which was built in celebration of the convention's 75th anniversary.

  • Fiddlers' Convention Celebrates 75 Years

    No one remembers exactly who first suggested it, as members of the Galax Moose Lodge No. 733 sat around a coal stove in the old Matthews Hardware building in 1934, brainstorming ideas for a new fundraiser.
    At some point, five words signaled the beginning of an event that has become known worldwide — “Let’s try a musical program.”

  • Convention registration rises again this year

    Registration for the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention has increased for the third year in a row, rising from 1,905 last year to 2,004.
    Until 2008, the convention had been experiencing a five-year slump.

  • Downtown Galax is for fiddlers' fans only Sunday morning

    Galax’s population will soar in the coming week, as thousands of fiddlin’ fans descend on the city.
    Felts Park will open its gates at 7 a.m. Sunday for the 75th Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention. The competition opens Monday night and lasts through Aug. 14.

  • Fancy Gap visitors' center expands

    FANCY GAP — Construction on a visitor’s center project took wing as an Eagle Scout project in downtown Fancy Gap Tuesday.
    Building the 20 benches facing the Pickin’ Porch off U.S. 52 is specifically a final service project for Ian Robertson-Gouge and a community service project for the rest of Troop 286, said Scoutmaster Allen Robinson.

  • New stage will be ready for fiddlers' convention

    The Felts Park permanent stage, being constructed by Branson Construction of Chilhowie, was slated to reach substantial completion on July 25, meaning that it will be ready in time for the 75th anniversary of the Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention the second week in August.
