  • Christmas at the Chesterfield Hotel

    When local Brandon Farmer was approached to write an original Christmas play for his church, he wanted to create something that would show the realities of the season.
    “Christmas at The Chesterfield Hotel,” which is to be performed at Galax Pentecostal Holiness Church on Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m., is not a typical church play, but it brings to light some messages from the Bible, said Farmer.

  • Dance conservatory presents holiday classic

    The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre will present its sixth annual production of the "The Nutcracker" in four performances, Dec. 16-19 at the Galax High School.
    This year includes two performances of the classic "Nutcracker" and two performances of the "Nutty Nutcracker."
    The Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows all start at 6 p.m., while the Sunday performance is at 2 p.m.
    The Dec. 17 "Nutty Nutcracker" performance is student night. All tickets for those 18 and younger are $3.

  • HoustonFest grows, nurtured by musician's legacy

     Had his life not been cut short by a motorcycle crash this spring, banjo prodigy Houston Caldwell would have turned 19 this week.

    The soldier, musician, firefighter and community volunteer is missed, but his legacy of service and talent will live on.

  • Concert to honor musician's memory

    The Rex Theater's “Blue Ridge Backroads Live” radio show will host a concert Friday in memory of young musician Houston Caldwell, who passed away on April 30.

    The concert, featuring The Snyder Family Band with Zeb & Samantha, is the first in a series to be held at the Rex, leading up to the first-ever HoustonFest in Felts Park in Galax on May 6-7, 2011.

  • Guild's new play gets audience involved

    “Smoke on the Mountain,” a hilarious musical play that takes place in the sanctuary of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in North Carolina during the Depression years of the late 1930s, will be performed by the Galax Theatre Guild Saturdays, Oct. 2 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, Oct. 3 and 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Rex Theater in downtown Galax.

  • Blue Ridge Backroads celebrates parkway anniversary with concert

    The FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway Fisher Peak Chapter, in conjunction with the City of Galax and WBRF Radio 98.1 FM, is hosting a special presentation of the Blue Ridge Backroads radio show tonight, Friday.
    The evening is dedicated to the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
    A special anniversary cake will be shared by all prior to the live radio show. The FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway will also share information about the parkway and how we can all join in to preserve this wonderful natural treasure.
