  • Fiddlers' convention registration drops by 141

    Registration for the Galax Old Fiddlers’ Convention is down by 141 contestants from 2013, one of the largest drops in the past four years.

    Registration numbers had been declining slowly but steadily for the past three years, after topping out at 2,004 contestants for the event’s 75 anniversary in 2010. This year’s total is 1,675.

    The registration figures were released by the Galax Moose Lodge #733, organizers of the 79-year-old event, the world’s largest gathering of bluegrass and old-time fans and musicians.

  • Fiddlers will flock to Galax this weekend

    Galax’s population will soar in the coming week, as thousands of fiddlin’ fans descend on the city. Felts Park will open its gates at 7 a.m. Sunday for the 79th Annual Old Fiddlers’ Convention. The competition opens Monday night and lasts through Aug. 9.

    Most of the convention’s expected 1,300 campers will show up Sunday to set up camp.

  • BBQ contest adds People's Choice award

    This year’s 10th Annual Smoke on the Mountain barbecue contest will be held July 18-19 in downtown Galax.

    For the first time, the public will have a chance to vote in a People’s Choice contest, sponsored by Horton's Supermarket of Galax.

  • Vince Gill to perform at Wayne Henderson Festival

    MOUTH OF WILSON — Country music star Vince Gill will headline the 20th Annual Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition this year.

    The family-friendly event is scheduled for June 21 at Grayson Highlands State Park near Mouth of Wilson in Grayson County.

    Also on stage will be Bill Kirchen, Dale Jett and Hello Stranger, the Snyder Family Band, Kazuhiro Inaba and Wayne Henderson and Friends.

  • Conservatory to perform youth ballet

    The Conservatory of Dance & Theatre and The Galax Youth Ballet will present the enchanting, heart-warming story ballet “La Fille Mal Gardée” on June 14 at 6 p.m. and June 15 at 2 p.m. with this comedic ballet.

  • Leaf & String features music, books and art

    The annual Galax Leaf & String Festival in downtown Galax highlights the best our region has to offer, from music and literature to dance, art and crafts.
    This year’s festival is June 13-14. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

  • Plein Air Day set for Saturday, June 21

    The Summer Plein Air Day at Mt. Vale Vineyards is scheduled for 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, June 21, rain or shine.

    Plein Air artists paint outdoors, working quickly to capture the light and complete their work in one day.

  • Boyer memorial service to be held at Rex

    A memorial service for Anna Vaughan Boyer of Galax will be held this Saturday, May 10 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at the Rex Theater.

    Mrs. Boyer was active in many community improvement efforts, helping restore and run the Rex Theater as well as promoting old time music and leading volunteers in numerous projects, including music festivals. In addition, she helped organize youth league baseball in the Newport News area.

    The service is open to those who wish to remember her and her legacy.
