  • She's eight

    Tiarra Skye Bedwell celebrated her eighth birthday July 27 with family and friends with a Barbie party at the Fries Pool. Her birthday was July 25.

  • Pollock, Patton engagement announced

    Royal and Joyce Tharpe of South Hill and David Pollock of Blackstone announced the engagement of their daughter, Krystal Leigh Pollock of South Hill to Robert Chad Patton of South Hill.
    The bride-to-be is the granddaughter of Anne Pollock of Blackstone and Mary Stables and the late Otis Thomas of South Hill.

    The prospective groom is the father of Ella and Kira Patton. He is the son of the late Robert Patton of Galax, and Tim and Nancy Huff of Clarksville.

  • Johnson, Bryson to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Gary Johnson announce the engagement and marriage of their daughter, Kelly Michele of Raleigh, N.C., to Jamar Lavelle Bryson, son of the late Pandora Bryson and foster son of Frank and Carolyn Robinson of Galax.

    The wedding is Oct. 5 at Hayes Barton United Methodist church in Raleigh, N.C.
    A honeymoon to Hawaii is planned.
    The couple will reside in Raleigh, N.C.

  • Patton, Byron exchange vows

    FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — Leanne Darlene Patton and James Corey Byron were united in marriage June 29 in Memorial Chapel at Fort Campbell Army Post. The ceremony was officiated by Chaplain Jose M. Rondon.
    The bride is the daughter of Ray and Lisa Patton of Hillsville, Va. She is the granddaughter of Carl and Joyce Caudill of Fancy Gap, Va., and Essie and the late Phil Patton of Hillsville, Va.

  • Halseys celebrate 50th anniversary

    Tommy and Hazel Halsey celebrated their 50th anniversary July 25, 2013.
    They were married July 25, 1963, at the home of Camet “Bus” and Carolene Halsey in Volney by the Rev. Willard Reedy. The couple have been longtime members of Volney Baptist Church.
    They have one son, Jonathan Clay Halsey and wife, Megan, of Galax, and granddaughters Hannah Grace and Katie Clay.

    Makayla Grace Hancock celebrated her third birthday March 28 with a Minnie Mouse party at Trinity Baptist Church fellowship hall. She is the daughter of Kevin “Bubba” and Pam Hancock of Hillsville.

    Grandparents are Doug and Carol Hancock of Hillsville and Chuck and Pat Edwards of Woodlawn. Great-grandparents are Joseph Ayers of Hillsville, Edd Crotts of Woodlawn and Louis and Bonnie Edwards of Woodlawn.

    Timber Abrianna Mundy celebrated her fifth birthday on Aug. 20 with a Dora the Explorer pool party at the Wildlife Club in Low Gap, N.C. Her sisters Hope Gaynor and Taelynn Mundy helped her celebrate, along with special friends and family members.

    She is the daughter of Tammy L. Liddle and Tim L. Mundy. Maternal grandparents are Brenda Liddle and Emory Bearden of Woodlawn, and Charles Liddle of Galax. Paternal grandparents are Don and Mabelene Beverly of Cana and Wayne Mundy of Cana.

    Riley Madison Coleman celebrated her eighth birthday Aug. 18 at The Galax Smokehouse with family and friends. Her parents are Heather Drennen of Galax and Randy Coleman of China Grove, N.C.

    Her grandparents are Edna and Nelson Coleman, Anna Coltrane and Pat Drennen. She has three brothers, Nathan Bemis and Wyatt and Luke Coleman and one sister, Olivia Coleman.

  • Jones, Ward to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones of Independence announced the engagement of their daughter, Shanna Michelle Jones, to Andrew (Andy) Phillip Ward, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Ward of Galax.

    A wedding is planned for Oct. 5.

  • Halseys celebrate 50th anniversary

    Volney Baptist Church honored its pastor, the Rev. Doug Halsey and his wife Jean, with a surprise lunch in the church’s fellowship hall after morning services July 21.

    The fellowship hall was decorated for the occasion with flowers, candles and balloons. There was a four-tiered cake and family photos. About 80 people attended.
    The couple were presented with a scrapbook covering their 50 years together as well as the years they have been at the church.
