  • Combs, Calfee to be married

    Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Combs Jr.  of Sugar Grove announced the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Renee, to William Quinton Calfee of Wytheville.

    Combs is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grover “Joe” and Gaye Pugh of Troutdale and Sherman Gayle Combs Sr. and the late Ora May Combs of Sugar Grove.
    Calfee is the son of Charles B. Calfee and the grandson of William A. and the late Frances Calfee of Wytheville.
    Both are graduates of Wytheville Community College and reside in Wytheville.

  • Turns 94

    Lelia Poe celebrated her 94th birthday Aug. 7 with a party at her home. She was born Aug. 4, 1917. She was the wife of the late Kyle Poe.

    She is the mother of Bobby Poe of Edgewater, Md., and the late Ralph Poe. She has four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

  • Cornett, Drawdy marry

    Marley Emerald Cornett and Russell Vincent Drawdy were joined in marriage during an outdoor ceremony at the gazebo of West Wind Farm Winery and Vineyard in Max Meadows on June 17, 2011. David Manley officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of David and Teresa Cornett of Woodlawn. Her grandmothers are Bonnie Cornett of Galax and Donna Elliott of Murrells Inlet, S.C.

  • Williams, Carter to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Dana Williams announce the engagement of their daughter, Keisha Williams, to Chad Carter, son of Frank and Kathleen Carter.

    A September wedding is planned.

  • Hawkses celebrate 50th anniversary

    Clifford and Bonnie Hawks celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 22 with their 12 children, 20 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

    Clifford Hawks owned and operated Hawks Produce in Sparta, N.C., and Elkin, N.C., for 42 years. Bonnie Hawks is a housewife.

  • Brewer, Smith marry

    FRIES — Cory Shane Smith and Elena Carol Brewer were united in marriage July 31 at Grace Baptist Church in Fries.
    Pastor Ben Haga performed the double ring ceremony.

    The bride was escorted by her brother, Jamie Brewer, and given in marriage by her parents and brother.
    The bride’s parents are Doug and Glenda Forester of Galax, and the late James “Jimmy” Brewer.
    The groom’s parents are Charles and Sue Smith of Fries.

  • He's six

    Ryder Cole Rose celebrated his sixth birthday July 3, 2011. Her parents are Tina and Eric Rose of Fries.

    He has a three sisters, Samantha, Cheyenne and Trinity Rose of Fries. Her grandparents are Jimmy and Edna Hines of Fries and Connie Dowling of Galax. Her great-grandparents are Robert Dowling of Galax. the late Ressie Dowling of Fries, the late Mollie and Hobert Hines of Fries and the late Arlene and Speedy Osborne of Austinville. He also has an aunt, uncles and cousins.

    Samantha Autumn Rose celebrated her third birthday June 24, 2011. Her parents are Tina and Eric Rose of Fries.

Her great-grandparents are Robert Dowling of Galax. the late Ressie Dowling of Fries, the late Mollie and Hobert Hines of Fries and the late Arlene and Speedy Osborne of Austinville. She also has an aunt, uncles and cousins.

  • Osborne, Roberts to marry

    Jessica (Jessie) Osborne and Tracy (Spike) Roberts have announced their engagement.
    She is the daughter of Lisa Osborne and the late Harley Osborne of Morganton, N.C.

    He is the son of Janet and Truman Roberts of Elk Creek.
    A wedding date will be announced later.

  • Eastridge, Hudson to wed

    Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Eastridge announce the engagement of their son, Travis Blake Eastridge, to Lyndsey Faith Hudson.
    Hudson is the daughter of Richard and Diane Strock of Bland.

    She is a 2005 graduate of Rocky Gap High School and a 2009 graduate of Wytheville Community College.
    Eastridge is a 2004 graduate of Grayson County High School and a 2007 graduate of Wytheville Community College.
    An October wedding is planned.
