• Midkiff-Skaggs, Rizzo to marry Sept. 15

    Carla and Kevin Frost of Galax, along with Todd and Kim Skaggs of Shepherdsville, Ky., announced the engagement of their daughter, Emerald Leigh Midkiff-Skaggs, to Joseph Michael Rizzo, son of Dr. Brian and Debra Rizzo of Charlottesville.

    Midkiff-Skaggs graduated in 2004 from Galax High School.
    She obtained her bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of Virginia in 2009.
    She is employed as an executive assistant research analyst in Winston-Salem, N.C.

  • Szewczyk, Hicks marry

    Tony Szewczyk of Derby, Conn., and Susan Roudebush of Leesburg, announce the marriage of their daughter, Mary Anne Frances, to Matthew Alan Hicks, son of Alan and Vicki Hicks of Galax.

    The bride is the granddaughter of the late Bob Moreland and Mary Etta Moreland of Falls Church and the late David and Estelle Szewczyk of Derby.
    The groom is the grandson of John and Bonnie Ayers of Galax, the late Dallas Brown of Woodlawn and the late Marshall and Dorothy Hicks of Gastonia, N.C.

  • Bartletts celebrate 60th anniversary

    William and Margie Bartlett celebrated their 60th anniversary June 21 at the Barn Dinner Theatre in Greensboro, N.C. After a buffet dinner, guests were entertained by the Southeast Express Bluegrass Band.

  • Wiford, Rice engagement announced

    The Rev. and Mrs. Tim Wiford of Anderson, Ind., and Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Rice of Galax announce the engagement of their children, Kayla Renae Wiford to John Stanley Rice.
    Wiford is a graduate of Ivy Tech Community College with an associate degree in surgical tech. She is currently employed with Home Instead Senior Care.

    Rice is a graduate of Radford University with a bachelor of science in pre-med. He is working toward his doctorate as a nurse practitioner.
    A Nov. 16 wedding date is planned in Anderson, Ind.

  • Combs, Vaughn to marry

    Steve and Melissa Combs of Hillsville announced the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Michelle, to Matthew Cody Vaughn, the son of Ed and Lora Terry of Hillsville and Ralph and Sharon Vaughn of Austinville.

    Combs graduated from Carroll County High School in 2007 and from Wytheville Community College in 2011 with an associate’s degree in nursing.
    She is a registered nurse at the Virginia Department of Health in the Mount Rogers District.

  • Moores celebrate 50th anniversary

    Rebecca Ruth Bond and William Peary Moore celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 28.
    They were married on July 28, 1962, at the Alleghany Courthouse in Sparta, N.C., by Justice of the Peace Floyd T. Miller.

    Attending their wedding were their mothers, Peggy Bond and Margaret Moore and friend, Thelma. They later spent their honeymoon at “Granny” Mary Emily Tate’s house in Eagle Bottom in Fries and began their 50 years of marriage together.

    Braeden Hunter Ward turned three years old on June 26. He celebrated with an outer space cake and a party at his home. He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence. He also has a little brother, Levi.
    His grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Agnes Cox, Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

    They have two children, Gary Grantand Michelle Ann Shaffner. Also, they have seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    David and Susi Tornow of Galax announce the marriage of their daughter, Katherine Valler, to Dustin Gene Bays, son of Donnie and Nancy Bays of Weber City.

    The bride was graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelor of arts degree and is pursuing a master’s degree in social work.
    She is employed as a mental health clinician at Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare.
    The groom received a bachelor of science degree from Emory & Henry College.
    He is employed as director of internal audit at the Bank of Botetourt.
