  • Hortons celebrate 50th anniversary

    Ranza and Doris Horton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 6.
    They were married by the Rev. Donald Clay, a Church of the Brethren pastor, at his home in Willis.

    They have lived 44 years on Oak Grove Road in Austinville.
    The couple enjoyed a weeks vacation at Holden Beach, N.C., with all their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and daughter, and then a surprise party at Carter’s Park with family.

    Chris is the son of B.C. and Teresa Mabry of Barren Springs.

    Megan is the maternal granddaughter of Kenneth and Sue Anders of Galax. She is the maternal great granddaughter of Ruth Rutherford of Galax. She is the paternal granddaughter of the late Charles and Bonnie Pickett.

  • Parks, Anders marry

    Hannah Leigh Parks and Justin Cebert Anders were married Aug. 21, 2010 in a private ceremony at 10 a.m. at Bald Rock United Methodist Church in Flat Ridge.
    Glenn Hyatt officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of Greg and Sharon Parks of Kernersville, N.C. She is a graduate of Appalachian State University, with degrees in psychology and outdoor education.
    The groom is the son of John and Leona Anders of Rugby. He is a graduate of Grayson County High School and is self employed.

    Andrea Lynn Cooley celebrated her seventh birthday July 16 with family and friends. She had a Barbie cake. Her parents are Jennifer L. Cooley of Fries and Travis Cooley of Independence.

    Her grandparents are Bill and Ruby Manning of Woodlawn, Joy and Roy Forrest of Galax and Herbert Gray Cooley of Wytheville. Her great-grandpa is Howard G. Jones of Galax. She has an older sister, Savannah Rose Cooley.

    Brayden Scott Ramey celebrated his first birthday July 23 with a ball-themed party at Felts Park in Galax with family and friends. He is the son of Brian Ramey and Carri Davis of Galax.

    His older sisters are Maci and Hallie Ramey. Grandparents are Paul and Gwen Sawyers of Fancy Gap, Barry and Teresa Davis of Dugspur and Lena Mae and the late Junior Ramey of Galax. Great-grandparents are James Davis of Galax, Annie Burcham of Woodlawn and Andy and Mamie Sawyers of Fancy Gap.

  • Hill celebrates milestone with 100th birthday Aug. 21

    Glayds McCraw Hill celebrated her 100th birthday this month.
    She was born Aug. 20, 1910, and married Troy Hill on Aug. 26, 1928.

    They have two daughters, Irene Sumner and Vera McGrady. She has four grandchildren, six great and one step great-grandchild; five great-great and two step great-great-grandchildren. She is oldest of three living siblings.
    Hill has always been active in church, farming, cooking for her family and baking for the family restaurant until the late 1980s.
