Milestones

Marion and Michael Goldwasser of Hillsville and Dever Bernstine of Winter Garden, Fla., and Martin Bernstine of Ocoee, Fla., announced the engagement of Ellen Margaret Goldwasser and Matthew Yale Bernstine.

Goldwasser received her B.A. in Spanish with a minor in planning from the University of Virginia and is pursuing a master's in social work at Columbia University.
Bernstine received his B.A. and M.A. from UVa. in city planning and  works for HOC in NYC.

Hazel Louise Jackson observed her 100th birthday anniversary on Feb. 6 in the main dining hall of Wheatland Assisted Living in Hillsville at 3 p.m.
She was born Feb. 6, 1911 in Galax, and was the fourth of seven girls born to Joel and Addie Hawkins.
She was graduated from Galax High School in 1929, the year of the Great Depression.

Jackson’s father was a blacksmith and a mason who laid brick on many of the buildings built in the early 1900s in Galax.

Carolyn Elizabeth Gardner and Philip Michael Hash were married July 17, 2010.
Gardner is the daughter of Reginald and Jan Gardner.

She received a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and a master’s degree in British literature from Radford University.
She is employed by Grayson County schools as a secondary English teacher.
Hash is the son of Mike and Deanna Hash.
He received a bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College in environmental science.

Kasen Lane Galyean turned four on Jan. 9. He celebrated with a bull riding party at his home with family and friends. He is the son of Donnie and Angie Galyean of Baywood.

He is the grandson of Nelson and Linda Galyean, Jimmy and Cathy Jones and Dennis and Janie Cox. He is the great-grandson of Chuck and Mitzi Galyean and Naoma Davis. He has two sisters, Hailee Anders and Kristin Galyean.
