  • Stockton, Shaffner united in marriage

    Ryan Patrick Shaffner and Shaina Reni Stockton were married on Nov. 11 at Galax Pentecostal Holiness Church. A private ceremony was performed by Pastor Zachary Royer.

    The couple exchanged rings, lit unity candles and made their wishes come true.
    The groom’s sons, Christopher and Hunter, were his best men. His daughter, Kaitlyn, was flower girl.
    The bride’s parents are Doug and Jeannie Stockton of Galax. The bride’s father escorted her down the aisle.

  • Gamble, Whitaker to marry

    Michael and Rena Gamble of Mouth of Wilson announced the engagement of their daughter, Jessie Renea Gamble, to Justen Eugene Whitaker, son of Patsy Byrd of Richlands and Gene Whitaker of Galax.

    Gamble plans to graduate from Old Dominion University with a bachelor of science degree in human services. She is employed as a case manager for Mount Rogers Community Services Board of Independence. 
    Whitaker is employed as a commercial parts professional for Advance Auto Parts of Hillsville.

  • Turns five

    Madalyn Sierra Gregory celebrated her fifth birthday Oct. 11 with a special party at home with her parents and on Oct. 29 with family and friends at a Halloween costume party.

    She is the daughter of Jimmie and Whitney Gregory of Fries the granddaughter of John and Frances Pierce of Fries; William and Vergie Lundy and Eddie and Brenda Ward, all of Independence; and Jacky Testerman of Lansing, N.C.

  • She's one

    Madison Abigail Sluss celebrated her first birthday on Oct. 22, 2011, at Galax Recreation Center. She had a princess theme birthday party. Family and friends attended.

    Her parents are Scott and Cindy Sluss of Galax. She has a brother, Brandon Sluss. Grand-parents are Robert and Regina Lundy of Ennice, N.C.; and Bud and Pat Sluss of Tazewell.

  • Turns 91

    Lillie Mae Galyean Melton will turn 91 on Nov. 27, 2011. A Thanksgiving Day celebration was held for her with all her family attending.

  • Hamptons celebrate 65th anniversary

    Roy Dale Hampton Sr. and Juanita Smith Hampton celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Nov. 9.

    They married Nov. 9, 1946, just six months after he returned form serving in the U.S. Navy in Okinawa during World War II.
    She worked as a switchboard operator for Inter-Mountain Telephone Company.
    They have two children — Roy Dale Hampton Jr. of King, N.C., and Betsy H. Harrison of Independence. Their grandsons are Garrett Hampton Harrison of Greenville, Tenn., and Brandon Scott Hampton of King, N.C.

  • Sisters celebrate birthdays

    Djamani Peyton Ashland Young celebrated her third birthday Sept. 20 with a Lady Bug party with family and friends at home.

    Her sister, Jacory Madison Brooklyn Young, turned one March 18. Their parents are Joedy and Desmine Young.

    They also have two sisters, Jordan and Bryanna. Grandparents are Marcellous and Mary Martin, the late Frank Simpson and Cindy Townes and the late Isom Young. Great-grandparents are Sena R. Jackson and Floyd and Beatrice Spicer.

  • Turns 80

    Harold Combs of Independence celebrated his 80th birthday on Nov. 17, 2011.

    He is a Korean War veteran. He and his wife, Edie, have daughters Patti and Susie and four granddaughters, one grandson, three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

  • She's five

    Madalyn Gregory turned 5 years old on Oct. 11. She celebrated with a special birthday party at home on Oct. 11 with her daddy and mama, and a Halloween-themed party on Oct. 29 with family and friends.

  • Sumners celebrate anniversary

    Roger and Peggy Shaw Sumner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 1, 2011. They were married September 29, 1961, at Camp Zion Church by Lonnie P. Shaw.

    Their children — Lisa Mitchell of Raleigh, N.C., Brad Sumner of Atlanta, and Carmen Sumner of Lincolnton, N.C. — hosted a party at Locust Grove Church Fellowship Hall. Also attending were their two grandchildren, Charlie and Molly Mitchell of Raleigh. Many family and friends helped celebrate the memorable occasion.
