  • Fieldses celebrate 50th anniversary

    The Rev. Herman Jay Fields and wife, Janice, of Galax celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 28 at Cliffview Church of God’s Family Life Center.

    Their daughters and husbands, Pam and J.W. Lineberry and Patti and Ronnie Kirby, helped to host the event, along with their granddaughter and husband, Stephanie and Andrew Cockerham; grandson, Matthew Woodward and great-grandson, Noah Cockerham.
    The Rev. Fields’ twin brother Sherman Ray Fields and his wife, Jaunette, who is also Janice’s twin sister, also assisted with the celebration.

  • She's four

    Samantha Autumn Rose celebrated her fourth birthday June 24. Her parents are Tina and Eric Rose of Fries. She has two sisters, Cheyenne and Trinity and a brother, Ryder, all of Fries.

    Her grandparents are the late Connie Dowling and Jimmy and Edna Hines, all of Fries. Her great-grandparents are the late Ressie Dowling and Robert Dowling of Fries, the late Mollie and Hobert Hines of Fries and the late Allie Ray and Arlene Osborne of Austinville.

  • Biddle, Rios plan May 4 wedding

    Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Moser of Galax announced the engagement of their son, Ryan Christopher Rios, to Carissa Marie Biddle, daughter of Dan and Patsy Biddle of Forest.
    Rios is the grandson of Dr. Juan F. and Beverly Rios and Susan Kirkland and the late Steve Kirkland of Galax.

    He is a 2000 graduate of Galax High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in finance, insurance and business law from Virginia Tech in 2005.
    Rios is employed as a financial investigator with the office of the Virginia Attorney General.

  • Turns one

    Wyatt James Hash will celebrate his first birthday Aug. 6 at home with his family.

    His parents are Karen Hash and Eric Hash of Elk Creek. His grandparents are Becky and Larry Elliott and Milton and Barbara Hicks.

  • He's seven

    Ryder Cole Rose celebrated his seventh birthday July 3. His parents are Tina and Eric Rose of Fries. He has three sisters, Cheyenne, Trinity and Samantha, all of Fries.

  • Midkiff-Skaggs, Rizzo to marry Sept. 15

    Carla and Kevin Frost of Galax, along with Todd and Kim Skaggs of Shepherdsville, Ky., announced the engagement of their daughter, Emerald Leigh Midkiff-Skaggs, to Joseph Michael Rizzo, son of Dr. Brian and Debra Rizzo of Charlottesville.

    Midkiff-Skaggs graduated in 2004 from Galax High School.
    She obtained her bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of Virginia in 2009.
    She is employed as an executive assistant research analyst in Winston-Salem, N.C.

  • Szewczyk, Hicks marry

    Tony Szewczyk of Derby, Conn., and Susan Roudebush of Leesburg, announce the marriage of their daughter, Mary Anne Frances, to Matthew Alan Hicks, son of Alan and Vicki Hicks of Galax.

    The bride is the granddaughter of the late Bob Moreland and Mary Etta Moreland of Falls Church and the late David and Estelle Szewczyk of Derby.
    The groom is the grandson of John and Bonnie Ayers of Galax, the late Dallas Brown of Woodlawn and the late Marshall and Dorothy Hicks of Gastonia, N.C.

  • Bartletts celebrate 60th anniversary

    William and Margie Bartlett celebrated their 60th anniversary June 21 at the Barn Dinner Theatre in Greensboro, N.C. After a buffet dinner, guests were entertained by the Southeast Express Bluegrass Band.

  • Wiford, Rice engagement announced

    The Rev. and Mrs. Tim Wiford of Anderson, Ind., and Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Rice of Galax announce the engagement of their children, Kayla Renae Wiford to John Stanley Rice.
    Wiford is a graduate of Ivy Tech Community College with an associate degree in surgical tech. She is currently employed with Home Instead Senior Care.

    Rice is a graduate of Radford University with a bachelor of science in pre-med. He is working toward his doctorate as a nurse practitioner.
    A Nov. 16 wedding date is planned in Anderson, Ind.

  • Combs, Vaughn to marry

    Steve and Melissa Combs of Hillsville announced the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Michelle, to Matthew Cody Vaughn, the son of Ed and Lora Terry of Hillsville and Ralph and Sharon Vaughn of Austinville.

    Combs graduated from Carroll County High School in 2007 and from Wytheville Community College in 2011 with an associate’s degree in nursing.
    She is a registered nurse at the Virginia Department of Health in the Mount Rogers District.
