  • Jones, Ward to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones of Independence announced the engagement of their daughter, Shanna Michelle Jones, to Andrew (Andy) Phillip Ward, who is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Ward of Galax.

    A wedding is planned for Oct. 5.

  • Halseys celebrate 50th anniversary

    Volney Baptist Church honored its pastor, the Rev. Doug Halsey and his wife Jean, with a surprise lunch in the church’s fellowship hall after morning services July 21.

    The fellowship hall was decorated for the occasion with flowers, candles and balloons. There was a four-tiered cake and family photos. About 80 people attended.
    The couple were presented with a scrapbook covering their 50 years together as well as the years they have been at the church.

  • She's three

    Taelynn Isabella Mundy celebrated her third birthday on July 2 with a pool party at her home. Her sisters Hope Gaynor and Timber Mundy helped celebrate, along with many special friends and family members.

    She is the daughter of Tammy L. Liddle and Tim L. Mundy. Maternal grandparents are Brenda Liddle and Emory Bearden of Woodlawn, and Charles Liddle of Galax. Paternal grandparents are Don and Mabelene Beverly and Wayne Mundy, all of Cana.

  • He's one

    Nolan Jay Spurlin celebrated his first birthday on Aug. 8 with a cookout at his house with family.

    His parents are Jason Spurlin and Jill Cockerham of Galax. His grandparents are Danny and Carolyn Cockerham and Mike and Anita Spurlin, all of Galax.

  • He's seven

    Justin Beasley celebrated his seventh birthday with a Spiderman party at his Grandmother Becky’s house. His parents are Andrew Beasley and Elizabeth Brooks, both of Hillsville.

  • Leath, Bond announce engagement

    Lora Leath and Greg Bond recently announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

    Leath is the daughter of Ray and the late Mary Leonard of Galax. She is a graduate of Galax High School and employed at Southwest Virginia Home Health Care.
    Bond is the son of Don and Barbara Bond of Galax. He is a graduate of Carroll County High School and is self-employed.
    A wedding is planned for 2 p.m. on Sept. 7 at First Christian Church in Galax. A reception will follow at the Galax Country Club. Family and friends are invited.

  • Turns 90

    Mary Ellen Landreth of Fries celebrated her 90th birthday with a party at her home Aug. 17. The party was hosted by her children and grandchildren. She was born Aug. 15, 1923.

  • Bunn, Boyer engagement announced

    Johnny and Constance Bunn of Galax announced the engagement of their daughter, Natalie-Tess Amber Bunn, to Adam Seth Boyer, son of Phillip and Starlena Boyer of Independence.

    The future bride graduated from Wytheville Community College with an associate degree in nursing and is employed at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
    The future groom graduated from Wytheville Community College with a certificate in electrical and alternative energy. He is employed at Royal Mouldings in Marion.
    A rustic country wedding is planned for Aug. l6, 2014.

  • He's eight

    Ryder Cole Rose celebrated his eighth birthday July 3. His parents are Tina and Eric Rose of Fries. He has three sisters, Cheyenne, Trinity and Samantha Rose of Fries.

    His great-grandparents are Robert Dowling and the late Ressie Dowling of Fries, the late Mollie and Hobert Hines of Fries and the late Allie and Arlene Osborne of Austinville. His grandparents are Jimmy and Edna Hines of Fries and the late Connie Dowling of Fries. He also has a special friend, Ruby Hill.

  • Lucky 13

    Thirteen has been a “lucky number” for Paul and Melda Hill of Galax.

    They were married Aug. 13, 2000, and will be observing 13 years together. Thirteen people attended their wedding and their honeymoon in Florida was for 13 days.
