• DeHaven celebrates 105th birthday

    HILLSVILLE – A Hillsville resident celebrated a milestone birthday with a surprise party thrown by staff at Commonwealth Assisted Living on Sept. 30.
    In a room decked out with 105 brightly colored balloons, Louise DeHaven was brought to a surprise party to celebrate her 105th birthday. DeHaven has been a resident at Commonwealth since 2007 and staff, residents, family and friends gathered to show her just how special this birthday was.
    Her birthday was on Oct. 1.

  • McCormick, Hash to wed

    Jeremy and Kristi McCormick of Independence announce the engagement of their daughter, Madison Cambri, to Jared Allen Hash, son of Joe Hash of Independence and Tammy Copeland of Galax.

    A January 2017 wedding is planned.

  • He's seven

    Braeden Hunter Ward celebrated his 7th birthday on June 26. He had a Minecraft pool party with friends and family at the Grayson County Rec Park.

    He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence and has three younger brothers: Levi, Luke and Grayson. His grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley, and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward, and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

  • Robinson, Hamm to marry

    Randy Hamm and Linda Robinson announced that their wedding will be Oct. 1 at Eastlake Community Church in Moneta. Family and friends are welcome.

    Robinson is the daughter of Edgar and Pauline Jones.

  • Brothers celebrate birthdays

    Nolan Jay Spurlin celebrated his fourth birthday on Aug. 8, and his brother Luke Ryan Spurlin celebrated his second birthday on Aug. 29. They are the sons of Jason Spurlin and Jill Cockerham.

    Their grandparents are Mike and Anita Spurlin of Baywood and Danny and Carolyn Cockerham of Galax. Great-grandparents are Louise Diamond and Rubye Cockerham, both of Galax.

  • Devines turn 90

    A 90th birthday anniversary party was held for John (Jack) Devine and his wife Wanda Devine at the home of Jerry and Bobbie Fridley. They celebrated with family and friends.

    They are the parents of a son and spouse, Jacky Devine and Alice of Independence; and daughters, Sandy Cox and Bobbie Fridley of Galax. They have seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

  • Ward, Manning exchange vows

    Tammy Ward and Mike Manning exchanged wedding vows Aug. 7 in front of their church congregation at New Beginnings Community Church in Cana, along with their family and friends.
    Tammy is originally from Grayson County and is the daughter of Barry and Barbara Triplett of Troutdale.

    She is employed as circulation manager at The Gazette.
    Mike is originally from Carroll County and is the son of the late H.R. and Rowena Manning.
    The couple resides in Floyd County.

  • Couples celebrate 64th anniversary

    Two couples celebrated a milestone of 64 years of marriage with family and friends on Aug. 14 at Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Woodlawn.

    Elizabeth and June Catron were married on April 10, 1952 and Mary and Garnett Junior Lineberry were married on Aug. 2, 1952.
    Both couples are active in their church and community.

  • Louise Branch is 100

    Louise Branch turns 100 years old today, Friday.
    She has been a resident of Hillsville Health & Rehab (formerly Trinity Mission) since 2013, and previously lived at Wheatland Assisted Living since 2005.

    Branch was born in Knoxville, Tenn. At the time of her birth, Woodrow Wilson was president. She worked most of her life as a seamstress in the textile industry in Knoxville and did not retire until she was in her early 80s. She has been an avid traveler, and one of her favorite trips was to the Holy Land.

  • Baker turns two

    Julian Matthew Baker celebrated his second birthday June 19, 2016 with his big sister, Mackenzie and big brother, Lane. He is the son of Seth and Larissa Baker.

    His grandparents are Donnie and Kathy Baker, Kathy Halsey and Donny and Becky Haynes. His great-grandparents are Bob and Alice Baker, Vivian Wilson, Betty Haynes and James and Pattie Bolt. Special friends are David and Kim Stamper.
