  • Celebrates birthdays

    Jack and Wanda Devine celebrated their 88th birthdays Aug. 18 and Sept. 21 with family and friends at Hungry Mother State Park and breakfast at Shatley Springs.

    The celebration was given by daughters Sandy Cox, Jerry and Bobbie Fridley; and son Jacky and Alice Devine. They have seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

  • Jones, Poe announce engagement

    Randy and Belva Jones of Flat Ridge announced the engagement of their daughter, Kayla Noel Jones, to Eric Steven Poe.

    Poe is the son of Jimmy and Karen Poe of Bristol.
    A fall wedding is planned.

  • He's two

    Nolan Jay Spurlin celebrated his second birthday on Aug. 8 with a cookout at his house with family. His parents are Jason Spurlin and Jill Cockerham of Galax.

    His maternal grandparents are Danny and Carolyn Cockerham of Galax. His paternal grandparents are Mike and Anita Spurlin of Galax. His maternal great-grandparents are Rubye Cockerham and Louise Diamond, both of Galax.

  • She's five

    Palin Leanne Snider celebrated her fifth birthday Aug. 11 with a Bubble Guppies party at home with family and friends. Her parents are Curtis and Lorie Snider.

    She has a younger sister, Paisley Snider. Her grandparents are Danny and Linda Deskins of Dugspur and Harold and Joyce Snider of Dublin and the late Kathy Snider. Her great-grandparents are Pauline Marshall of Laurel Fork and the late Frieda Deskins. Her aunt is Holly Choate.

    Jenna Mae Hall celebrated her first birthday Sept. 7 with a Minnie Mouse party. Her parents are Cory Hall and Magan Lawrence.

    Grandparents are Mike and Debbie Lister, Mike and Robin Lawrence, Barbara Hall and Tommy and Tammy Caudill. Great-grandparents are David and Sylvia Fields, Jerry and Caroleen Lister, Bill and Pat Lawrence, Buddy and Wanda Brannock, Carl W. Stone Jr. and the late Linda Crouse. Her great-great-grandmother is Juanita Wittig.

  • Campbells renew vows for 10th anniversary

    Bonnie Bradshaw Campbell and Stephen Lee Campbell of Independence celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary by renewing marriage vows Aug. 6 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Elk Creek.

    The ceremony was officiated by the Rev. Tim Crockett. Pianist was Jeanette Morrison. Kenny Group read from scripture.
    “How Great Thou Art” was performed by Penny Ward.
    Jessie Sutherland, Mary Kelly and Joe Isaacs served as ushers.
    After reciting the traditional vows, the couple presented each other with their own.

  • Edwards, Smith to be married

    Kayla Edwards and Joseph Smith announce their upcoming wedding at 2 p.m. on Oct. 4.
    Edwards is the daughter of Michael and Sandra Edwards.
    Smith is the son of Patricia Smith.

    Maid of honor will be Jamie Payne. Bridesmaids will be Jamie Bowman and Melissa Grimes. Junior bridesmaid will be Katherine Nadeau.  Flower girl will be Cecilia “Joe” Nadeau.
    Best man will be Anthony Sides. Groomsmen will be Phillip Bennett and Michael “Tony” Bowman. Ring bearer will be Michael “Clay” Bowman.

  • Ward is five

    Braeden Hunter Ward turned 5 years old on June 26. He celebrated with a Spiderman bouncy house party.

    He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence. His younger brothers are Levi and Luke. Braeden’s grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley, and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Agnes Cox, Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward, and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

  • Sawyers, McGrady to marry

    Mr. and Mr. Larry Sawyers of Fries announced the engagement of their daughter, Keri Elizabeth, to Cody Blaine McGrady, son of Mr. and Mrs Donnie McGrady of Rugby.

    Sawyers is a 2008 graduate of Grayson County High School and a 2012 graduate of Radford University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is employed by Lewis Gale Pulaski Hospital in Pulaski.

    Morgan Machel Anderson celebrated her third birthday Aug. 17 with a cowgirl party on the river with family and friends. She is the daughter of Stephen and Samantha Anderson.

    Her grandparents are Neil and Debbie Anderson and Dave and Becky Williams. Her great-grandparents are Harold and Nancy Williams, Louise Roberts and the late Wayne Roberts.
