  • National Night Out returning Aug. 3

    With the Aug. 3 National Night Out crime prevention celebration being expanded to Main Street in downtown Galax to accommodate an expected 2,500-plus people, there is more room for activities and representation from community organizations.
    National Night Out, a free community event hosted by Twin County Crime Prevention Coalition, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Grayson and Main streets.

  • Project Lifesaver to hold fundraiser

    The fifth annual Golf and Summer Bash fundraiser to benefit Project Lifesaver, is Saturday at the Galax Municipal Golf Course and clubhouse.
    Project Lifesaver is a non-profit agency that works with individuals with autism, Down syndrome, dementia, Alzheimer’s and related disorders.
    Golfing shotgun start times are 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Music and hors d’oeuvres are at 4:30 p.m. and dinner, catered by Blue Moon Catering, is at 6.

  • Praisin' in the Park returns

    For Jennifer Morris, coordinator of the 3rd Annual Praisin' in the Park community Bible school, it's about bringing churches together, watching kids make friends and seeing them get to know Jesus.
    Praisin' in the Park, a free event for rising kindergartners through rising sixth graders, will be held July 25-29 in Felts Park in Galax. The community  celebration will begin on Sunday, from 4-7 p.m., with a night of family activities featuring food, games, inflatables and live Christian music from local bands.

  • Independence gears up for July 4th

    INDEPENDENCE — The Town of Independence will host its annual Fourth of July celebration with two days of activities Friday and Saturday.
    Crafts, food and drink vendors will open noon Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday at the McKnight Lot, located at the intersection of U.S. 58/U.S. 21 and the Historic 1908 Courthouse.

  • A park of their own

    LAMBSBURG — Neighborhood residents feel like they have a place to go for recreation, now that the Lambsburg community group has added the Frank Hawks Memorial Park at the former elementary school.
    The old expanse of asphalt has been patched, painted and transformed into a standard-sized tennis court and a regulation basketball court with a new 14-by-24-foot picnic shelter nearby. New swings and playground equipment stand in a shock-absorbing bed of sand — ready for use for those willing to brave the summer heat.

    INDEPENDENCE — People don't like to be told they can't or will never be able to do something. In fact, it usually provides motivation to go out and do exactly what you've been told you can't do.

    That certainly holds true for Karen Osborne of Independence.

    On Dec. 19, 2005, Osborne was diagnosed with Benign Meningioma, which is essentially a tumor that grows from the meninges — the layers of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord.
