The shelves are stocked with oodles of stuffed animals and a few baby dolls and other items in between but, with some bare spots still left, there's only enough toys at Rooftop of Virginia's toy shop to make it through the first week when it opens Nov. 29. 

Rooftop of Virginia's annual toy shop, which relies on donated toys, provides a chance for low-income families to purchase new and gently-used toys at a discounted rate. Rooftop of Virginia then uses the proceeds to buy more toys. 

 ELK CREEK — Being a postmaster in a small community like Elk Creek gave Tom Buchanan the opportunity to get to meet a lot of people.

Buchanan served as postmaster of the Elk Creek Post Office for several years and later retired as the postmaster at the Independence Post Office.

If you’ve every talked to Buchanan, it’s obvious that he’s never met a stranger.

He enjoys attending yard sales and has his own sales space at a flea market in Galax.

The 6th Annual Carroll County Fair begins Wednesday at the Southwest Virginia Farmers' Market, at the intersection of U.S. 58 and Interstate 77. Gate admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 7-12 and free for children ages 6 and younger.

HILLSVILLE — Despite the withering summer heat, participation in the community garden in Hillsville continues to blossom.
In the second year for the Gardens Growing Families effort at Childs' Farms off Cross Creek Road, some people arrive around the crack of dawn, before direct sunlight heats up the 2.5 acres of produce.
