The Wythe-Grayson Regional Library system welcomed its new director July 1.
J. Sara Paulk was appointed as new regional library director by the Wythe-Grayson Regional Library Board of Trustees.
Paulk comes from Georgia, where she served as an assistant director, a head librarian and a reference librarian in three different library systems.
She also worked in Concord, N.H., and Brooklyn, N.Y.
Paulk, along with her family, will be living in Grayson County.
FRIES — Seventeen teams raised $38,659.40 during Grayson County's Relay for Life held July 30-31 at the Fries Ballpark.
“We were really pleased with that,” said event co-chairman Lori Warren.
Teams from across Grayson County gather annually to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society event. During a Relay, volunteers celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.
The second Groovin’ on Grayson cruise-in and concert series of the summer will be held Friday with hundreds of antique and classic cars, motorcycles and antique farm equipment lining the streets of downtown Galax and live music at the outdoor Grayson Street stage with The Night Move Band.
The Night Move Band of North Carolina performs R&B, beach, classic rock, funk, and country music and features four-part harmonies on many of the songs.
The 2010 Relay For Life of Galax and Carroll County begins at 6 p.m. Friday at the Carroll County High School football field.
The survivors’ lap begins at 6:30 and registration begins at 5 at the survivors’ reception tent.
A survivors’ meal will be served July 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the VFW Building in Hillsville.
The event begins with a lap-walk in which all survivors are cheered on by well-wishers. Next is a lap in honor of those who have cared for loved ones who battled cancer.
John Nunn will appear at two Galax book signings this weekend for the Galax history book he co-authored with his sister, Judith Nunn Alley.
Nunn will sign copies of “Galax” at Snickerdoodles from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, 122 S. Main St.; and at Magic Mart on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., 1077 E. Stuart Drive.
The book includes more than 200 vintage images from the first 50 years of Galax, and is the most recent addition to the popular “Images of America” series from Arcadia Publishing.
