  • Red Cross hosts hot dog lunch

    The American Red Cross will have a hot dog lunch fundraiser on March 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    Menu includes one hot dog, chips, snack cake and drink for $3; or two hot dogs, chips, snack cakes and drink for $4.50.
    Red Cross volunteers will deliver two or more orders within a five-mile radius of the chapterhouse at 244 Beeline Drive.
    To place an order, call 236-2891 or fax to 236-3595. Early orders are appreciated.

  • Shorts Creek serving big country breakfast

    Shorts Creek Church of God will have a big country breakfast on Saturday, 7:30-10:30 a.m.
    Menu includes choice of sausage or bacon or country ham, eggs, biscuits, gravy, fruit and more.

  • Sexton, Dickens marry

    Marissa Daniele Sexton and David Thomas Dickens were united in marriage at Camp Dickenson by the Rev. Leo Phillips on Aug. 7, 2010.
    The bride was escorted to the altar by her father, and given in marriage by her family.
    The bride is the daughter of William and Doris Sexton of Max Meadows, and Dennis and Julia Swan of Sumiton, Ala.

    Her paternal grandparents are Helena Sexton and the late Charles Sexton of Galax. Her maternal grandparents are Colin Robinson and the late Betty Jo Robinson, of Waycross, Ga.

  • Brewer, Monk marry

    Melinda Sue Brewer and Timothy Allen Monk were united in marriage Oct. 16 at Fairview Baptist Church by Pastor Sam Holder.
    The bride is the daughter of Jimmy and JoAnne Brewer of Galax, and Peggy and James Carroll of Galax.
    The groom is the son of JoAnn Monk and the late Rev. James Monk of Galax.

    The couple’s daughters Skylar Rose and Autumn Starr Monk attended, as well as family and friends.
    The couple resides in Galax.

  • Hall, Shaw exchange vows

    Paul Wayne Shaw and Jennifer Edwards Hall were united in marriage on June 19, 2010.
    The couple had a private ceremony at the home of Charlie and Sandy Alderman. Close friends and family attended.
    The bride is the daughter of John Paul Edwards and the late Ruth Edwards of Galax. She is the granddaughter of the late Worth and Etoile Edwards of Galax and Martha Jones of Wilmington, Ohio.
    The groom is the son of James Shaw and the late Nellie Mae Shaw of Davy, W.Va.

  • GHS crowns 2010 homecoming queen

     

    Carrie Sage Lindsey, a senior, was crowned homecoming queen during Galax High School's homecoming game on Sept. 24. Due to a three-way tie, three seniors were named homecoming princesses — Raven Slater, Kristen Osborne and Hannah Cassell. Each princess was escorted by their father onto the GHS football field during the game's halftime.

  • Truckers' parade hits the road Saturday

    HILLSVILLE — Organizers of the fourth annual Truckers Parade Against Cancer would like to see the streets lined with people supporting the fight this Saturday.

  • Truckers roll out again to fight cancer

    Area truckers will roll out on Sept. 25 from Hillsville to help in the fight against cancer.  
    Participants in the fourth annual Truckers Parade Against Cancer will band together at Carroll County High School at 11 a.m., giving them time to eat and socialize before heading out at 2 p.m. westbound on U.S. 58, according to organizer Cindy Dixon.
    The destination is Grayson County High School in Independence.
    Many truckers have joined the “convoy for a cure” every year.
