  • Galax Book Club to hold annual sale

    The Galax Book Club will hold its annual book sale Aug. 11-14 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day, except 10 a.m.-noon on Aug. 14.

    The sale will be in the lower level of Antique Apple on Main Street in Galax. Adult fiction and non-fiction hardback and paperback books, as well as juvenile books and videos, will be sold. The Galax Book Club will contribute all proceeds to the Galax Public Library to use for new books and/or materials to assist the library program.

  • Chamber presents 2010 awards

    A trucking company that employs more than 200 in the Twin Counties was named Twin County Regional Chamber of Commerce's Business of the Year on Saturday, during the chamber's annual awards banquet.

    Hill's Coal & Trucking began in the early 1960s in Fries, hauling coal and fertilizer, said Raquel Lyons, the chamber's executive board attorney, before presenting the trophy to co-owner James Hill.

    James and Gus Hill are the original founders of the business.

  • VFW Post 1115 celebrates 75 years

    HILLSVILLE — 1935 proved a busy year in the Twin Counties.

    Construction wrapped up on the Blue Ridge Parkway and tourists got to drive on the scenic national park road for the first time starting in the fall.

    Fiddlers gathered in a convention for the first time in Galax to play some old-time tunes.

    And, on May 15 of that year, 29 men who had served their country in the military mustered together to create the Grover King Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1115.
