Wythe pulls away from Tide

-A A +A

For the first half, the Galax Maroon Tide girls’ hung close with heavily favored George Wythe last Thursday night.

But the second half was a different story as the Maroons scored 10 unanswered points to take a 10-point lead early in the third period and cruise to a 48-39 nondistrict victory over the Tide.

The Tide (12-8) was the underdog against the high-powered Maroons but someone forgot to tell the Galax players.

From the opening tip, Galax showed the Maroons (19-3) that they came to play.

Both teams had trouble finding the mark in the early going. Sydney Fisher hit a layup with 6:15 left in the quarter for a 2-0 Maroon lead and Kailey Ingo stole the ball and raced in for the layup and a 4-0 lead.

Hayden Cassell popped a 3-pointer from the corner to cut the lead to 4-3 while Kaitlyn Poole hit a jump shot for a 6-3 lead. Brown hit a foul shot and Tianna Crockett answered for the Maroons with a foul shot and 7-4 lead. Kylee Hill canned a jump shot to cut the lead to 7-6 and Poole scored for a 9-6 lead.

Brown made a great second effort play when she scored on a putback to cut the lead to 9-8. With only 4.1 seconds left in the quarter, Grayson Anders hit a jump shot at the buzzer for an 11-8 Maroons lead.

Brown tied the score at 13-all when she hit a layup and was fouled. She made the foul shot for a three-point play.

The Maroons took the biggest lead of the quarter at 18-14 but Foxx hit a layup then stole the ball and scored to tie the game at 18-all at halftime.

The early part of the third period was the killer for the Maroon Tide.

Ingo was fouled with nine seconds gone in the third period. She hit both free throws. Poole followed with a jump shot, Crockett grabbed a loose ball and scored, while Anders hit a pair of buckets for a quick 10-point Maroon lead.

The Maroon Tide, although they continued to contest every move the Maroons made, never recovered and fell behind 37-27 after the third period and couldn’t cut into the lead in the fourth period.

Maroon Tide coach Howard Mayo felt his team didn’t handle the basketball very well against the physical Maroons.

“I think we put out a good defensive effort the entire game,” Mayo said. “George Wythe used it to their advantage when we committed a turnover,” he said.

Mayo said he was pleased with their outstanding effort against the Maroons who have only lost three games this year. They are 9-0 and lead the Hogoheegee District.

Brown turned in a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds) while Foxx added 13 for the Maroon Tide.

Poole led the Maroons with 18 points and Anders contributed 11.
