FANCY GAP — Major injuries resulted from a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. 52 when the driver blacked out while behind the wheel Wednesday morning, according to a Virginia State Police report.
The 2000 Mustang, being driven by Sonya Bowman, 38, of Fancy Gap, went off the road to the right and struck a tree, about 2.5 miles south of Virginia 608, according to Trooper R.B. Phipps. The tree kept the vehicle from rolling down the sizable embankment there.
Phipps took a statement from passenger Michael Kevin Payne about the driver blacking out.
Both the driver and the passenger had serious injuries, and both were flown out by helicopter for medical treatment from a landing zone in Mount Airy, N.C.
