Six area players earn all-Region C recognition while Carroll’s Fink named first-team all-SWD.

By Staff Reports

Galax’s Allison White leads a list of six Twin County volleyball players earning all-region recognition, and Carroll County’s Autumn Fink has earned a spot on the all-Southwest District team.

White, a senior middle hitter, was voted to the all-Region C first team after helping lead the Maroon Tide to a region Division 1 runner-up finish and a spot in the state semifinals.

Teammates Harley Brewer, Grace Wilson and Bailey Shumate were also honored, as were Grayson County’s Natasha Moore and Brandi Goad.

White finished four kills shy of 300 in 92 games on the season, leading the Maroon Tide in hitting as well as in digs (236), and was second on the team with 101 blocks. White served for 153 points on the year.

Jordan Watson of Auburn earned the region’s player of the year award. Bath County’s Dave McGee was voted the Division 1 coach of the year, alongside Sherry Millirons of Auburn in Division 2.

Brewer and Moore were second-team selections. Brewer paced Galax with 124 blocks on the year and was third on the team with her 159 kills.

Moore finished the regular season with a team-high 185 kills in 73 games as Grayson County pulled off a remarkable turnaround from a four-win season in 2010 to the region’s Division 2 semifinals this year. Moore served for 181 points and had 51 blocks before entering region tournament play.

Earning honorable mention status were Wilson, Shumate and Goad.

Wilson was Galax’s top setter with 340 assists and also served for 199 points, including 37 aces. Shumate did a little of everything for the Maroon Tide. She led the team in serving points with 203 and aces with 55. She finished second on the team in both kills (292) and assists (262), served at a .925 accuracy rate and came up with 172 digs.

Goad put up a massive amount of assists in Grayson County’s one-setter scheme, finishing with 553 in the regular season. She also fired 26 aces among her 183 serving points and was second in the Twin Counties with her .973 serving percentage.

Carroll County’s libero, Fink was the Cavaliers’ only selection on the all-district’s first team and finished the regular season with 382 digs, nearly 150 more than No. 2 on the list. The senior was a .939 server with 254 points, including 27 aces.

Morgan Dickens, Lexi Hodge and Ashley Willard were second-team all-district picks. Dickens led the Cavaliers with 392 assists through the regular season, Hodge finished with 198 kills and Willard put away a team-high 226 kills.

Miranda Young, Murphy Smith and Autumn Hill were honorable mention all-district picks for the Cavaliers.

Jordyn Cole of Richlands was the SWD’s player of the year and the Blue Tornadoes’ Ronnie Sparks was the coach of the year.
