Water plant site found

INDEPENDENCE — A site has been chosen for the new regional water system in Independence — and negotiations are underway to purchase the land.

Bobby Lane, of Lane Engineering, updated Independence Town Council July 8 on the progress of both the new water system and the upgrades to the town’s wastewater plant — both of which will serve the new state prison being built just outside Independence.

Lane said a site had been chosen for the new plant, but the land had not been secured yet.

“We are in discussions with the property owner,” Lane told council. “That property owner has been very cooperative and we are very optimistic that the site will be obtained in the near future.”

The new system is a partnership between Independence and Sparta, N.C.

Lane presented council with what he called “aggressive schedules” for both projects.

The new water system is expected to begin construction in April 2009 and be finished by June 2010. The Virginia Department of Corrections has set June 2010 as the completion date of the new prison, as well.
