Volunteers pack 1,100 boxes for Community Food Fund

-A A +A

Chief David C. Hankley of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department submitted this letter to The Gazette about the Community Christmas Food Fund, which the department took on as a project this year:

On behalf of the Galax Fire Department and Y’s Men Club, I want to thank our community for the great support that we received for the Community Christmas Food Fund.
On Dec. 19, we had over 200 people swarm the fire station to pack the food boxes. Because each of the 550 families will receive two boxes, there were actually 1,100 boxes to pack.
We started at 7:10 p.m. and were done at 8:25 p.m. — 75 total minutes. This comes to 14 boxes per minute!
Each recipient will receive 47 items, which means that there were over 28,850 items packed. Henry Ford, the creator of the assembly line, would have been proud.
As for our $30,000 goal, we are a couple thousand short right now, with a few ancillary expenses to come in, as well.
So, if you have given, thank you.
If you helped pack, thank you.
If you helped deliver, thank you.
And, if you haven’t donated to this very worthwhile and community-oriented cause, please do. Donations can be made any time by mailing to: Community Fund Drive, PO Box 330, Galax, Va. 24333.
Great job to all and thank you immensely.

Radiothon brings Christmas fund closer to goal

Magic Mart shoppers felt plenty of Christmas spirit at the Galax store on Dec. 15 during the Galax Fire Department’s Community Christmas Food Fund radiothon.
The annual fund-raising event included plenty of music, activities and an auction featuring several large items. It was broadcast over radio stations WWWJ-1360 AM and WBRF-98.1 FM.
The fire department, which took over the charity from the Galax Y’s Men this year, has worked hard to spread the word about the community’s needs this year. The goal was to raise $30,000 to fill 1,100 food boxes for 550 needy families in the Galax, Carroll and Grayson area.
On Dec. 19, hundreds of volunteers arrived at the fire house to fill boxes, which were delivered on Dec. 22.

Donations for the food drive can be sent to: GVFD Community Christmas Food Fund, P.O. Box 330, Galax, Va. 24333. Checks should be made payable to: The Community Christmas Fund.
