HILLSVILLE — Police and rescue personnel responded to an accident July 1 on the mile marker 8 southbound ramp on Interstate 77.
According to a report by Trooper R. Dean Horton of the Virginia State Police, Jimmy R. Bennett, 64, of Beckley, W.Va., was operating a 2012 GMC SUV in the left lane on southbound I-77 near the Exit 8 ramp around 3:55 p.m., when he clipped a 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer operated by Dendrell D. Roberson, 26, of Robersonville, N.C.
At the scene, Bennett explained to Horton that he was in the left lane, passing the Volvo, and at the last minute he tried to merge into the exit lane.
When he cut in front of Roberson, the rear end of the GMC clipped the front end bumper of the tractor trailer.
Bennett spun across the lanes and struck the embankment along the exit ramp, Horton said.
Bennett received minor injuries, and was transported by ambulance to Twin County Regional Hospital.
Damages were estimated at $10,000 to the GMC and $500 to the Volvo.
Bennett was charged with reckless driving, Horton said.
Police were assisted by Hillsville Fire and Rescue and the Carroll County Sheriff’s office.
