HILLSVILLE Two people from Cana died after a double shooting early Monday that Carroll deputies have determined was a murder-suicide.
Brandy O'Neal had gone with a family member to pick up their children, ages 4 and 8, to her ex-husband's home on Flinthill Road in Cana, according to Sheriff Warren Manning.
O'Neal had been staying with her parents in North Carolina.
Brandy O'Neal went into the home of Kevin Dean O'Neal and left her sister outside.
The sister told deputies that she heard two shots and called authorities at about 1 a.m.
Deputies Chuck Edwards and Bobby Melton and Sgt. David Shockley responded to the scene.
They found Brandy O'Neal dead from a gunshot wound from a 9 mm handgun.
Kevin Dean O'Neal was alive but suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Cana Rescue Squad personnel transported him to Northern Surry Hospital in Mount Airy, N.C., where he died.
The children were found safe at Kevin O'Neal's parents' home.
Investigators Fred Bobbitt, Venton Smith and Shannon Goad were called to investigate the crime scene.
The investigation continues and authorities are awaiting findings of a medical examiner's report from Roanoke.
