My father was an attorney who handled many divorce cases.
He would say, “There’s his truth, there’s her truth and there’s the truth. It is my job to figure out what is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
I attended the Grayson County Board of Supervisors meeting Jan. 9 to do just that, about the potential repeal of zoning.
Surely, I thought, Mr. Rosenbaum, Mr. Sexton and Mr. Brewer would explain to us, their constituents, the costs and benefits of repealing zoning. They would tell us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. They never said a word.
I did hear about 30 citizens speak. About 25 spoke in favor of zoning. Many had families that were here for generations and most lived in Grayson for over 20 years.
The prominent themes were to fix any specific problem with a zoning, not to repeal the whole concept; the Grayson County Comprehensive Plan, just approved by these supervisors, is based on zoning so it makes no sense to repeal it; and lastly, suspicion because of secrecy about their motives.
The people who spoke against zoning included one family who said they had a business that did not comply with zoning which unfortunately caught fire and burned.
Another speaker who was confusing zoning with building codes, and two other speakers who said zoning raised taxes, which several speakers had shown to be just the opposite.
However, I am still waiting for Mr. Rosenbaum, Mr. Sexton and Mr. Brewer to “tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth” about why they think zoning needs to be abolished.
I would suggest that they each write a detailed article to be published in the newspapers explaining their positions and the reasons behind them. As one speaker said, “you work for us!”
From what I saw, we, your constituents do not want you to spend the county’s valuable time or money on this issue.
So, tell us the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
