HILLSVILLE — A 48-year-old commercial truck driver from Liberty, N.C., was injured in a one-vehicle accident at Interstate 77's mile marker 11 at about 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

The report by Virginia State Police Trooper J.R. Alderman said that driver Scott Wayne Stremmel, operating a 2007 Peterbilt for Carolina Tank Lines, ran off the road to the left.

The rig continued through the median and then through the guardrail and down an embankment before coming to a stop.

Hillsville and Cana fire departments responded to the scene to assist with landing a helicopter that flew Stremmel to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., for treatment.

The trooper estimated the damage to the tractor-trailer at about $15,000. He also issued a charge of reckless driving against Stremmel.
