Trojans knock off Galax 9-3

Time outdoors has been a rare luxury for Galax, which dropped its season opener to Alleghany, N.C.

Wiffle balls and batting cages are great, but there’s no substitute for actually being on the dirt doing the real thing.

Hampered by a conspiracy between basketball and Mother Nature that has kept Galax indoors most of the young season, the Maroon Tide dropped its season opener Wednesday, falling 9-3 to Alleghany, N.C., in a nondistrict game at Mountain View Park.

Alleghany was playing its fourth game, while Galax has been outside fewer than five times altogether in coach Verl Brown’s estimation.

“This is like our third time out,” Brown said. “That and a late start because of basketball is affecting us. Their bats were ahead of us, but I was disappointed we didn’t hit that pitcher. She wasn’t overpowering us.”

Galax never led, but the Maroon Tide hung close and trailed 4-2 after six innings despite managing just one hit in that span. But Alleghany (2-2) eliminated any suspense with a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh. Sammi Todd doubled home Celeste Caudill and scored on a base hit by Megan Eisner. Emily Andrews slapped an RBI single and Caudill returned to the plate with two outs, lashing a two-run single into left to cap the big inning, pushing the Trojan lead to 9-2.

Burgandy Bobbitt led off the Galax half of the seventh with a single, giving way to courtesy runner Molly Burnett, who scored her third run of the day when Janisa Lawson singled up the middle with two out.

Alleghany had taken the lead for good in the top of the first when Sarah Brooks doubled to left-center, scoring Todd. The Trojans widened the margin to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the third on two hits, two errors and three fielder’s choices, only one of which recorded an out. With the bases loaded and one out, Rachel Hoffman scored on a misplayed grounder and Lauren McKinnon’s infield single scored Caudill. Brooks later beat the throw home on a ground ball for the Trojans’ four-run lead.

Galax trimmed one run off the deficit in the home third when Bobbitt roped a double to deep center, and courtesy runner Burnett later scored on a wild pitch. The Maroon Tide got to within two runs in the fifth, again thanks to Bobbitt and Burnett. With two out, Bobbitt and Channing Russell drew back-to-back walks, and Burnett crossed on the Trojans’ only error of the afternoon.

Maddie Wooten earned the win for Alleghany, allowing three hits and striking out 12, overcoming seven walks and five wild pitches. Eight of the nine Trojans registered at least one hit each, led by Todd and Brooks with two each. Bobbitt, Galax’s No. 9 hitter, had two of the Tide’s three hits.

“I was real proud of Burgandy’s hitting, and she did a good job behind the plate,” said Brown. “The girls up from JV, I was proud of their composure. It’s going to take us a little while, but I think we’re going to be pretty good.”
